iPad Pro touch screen intermittent unresponsive

I have the iPad Pro 10.5 inch for roughly 4 months. I started finding intermittent touch issues that have been random. Its extremely bad when playing games where precision touch and timing are critical. Just normal day to day usage for email, web browsing, etc. you would not notice it much unless you attempt to draw in notepad, then I can see how occasionally it does not register touch while sliding a stylus and other times, its like a rapid touch response.

I have performed every single thing I could find from others having the same issue, and from the looks of how many complaints about this, it sounds like either design flaw or iOS issues. I have tried the following:

  • Turn off and on
  • Hard rest/restart
  • Clean the screen frequently
  • Removed the expensive tempered glass Screen protector
  • Switched case to a case that has no magnetic close
  • Use the Apply plug instead of a multi-usb port charger
  • Turning off Bluetooth
  • Turning off Background App Refresh
  • Turning off Multitasking
  • Etc...etc...etc..etc.

Nothing has worked and seeing all the various forums and posts from people, this is a big problem a rather massive quantity of people have with the iPad Pro's. This weekend I have just had it with this very new iPad Pro that is driving me crazy... I hit the forums looking for anything i have no tried and its all the same, nobody knows and many have just given up on iPads, a lot of people have turned their iPads in under warranty only to find the refurbished units they receive all have the same issue. I am right there with them, I have absolutely loved the Apple devices, my house nearly all Apply, TV's, iPhones, iPads, MacMini's, etc.

I was preparing to erase my iPad Pro and send it back, but gave it one more try, i literally went through every single setting, turning off every single feature and hard restart. After that, the issues are so far gone. I may have a pretty much featureless iPad Pro right now, however no more intermittent unresponsive touch, so i suspect its an iOS issue! I have no interest in turning on any settings one at a time until the issue returns, for now hoping it will eventually be resolved and i can turn everything back on, i just need to not deal with this issue for a while as it has nearly turned me away from Apple products going forward. As expensive as these devices are, we should not have these kind of issues.

This is an Apple problem that they are either NOT addressing and choose to ignore OR the issue is so sporadic that Apple engineers are having issue finding a definitive fix/solution.

I have been in semi-regular contact with someone at Apple that went to an Apple engineering conference recently and he has reported to me that all the engineers at that conference are NOT even aware of this touch screen issue and all of those at the conference using any model of iPad Pro have not had this issue with their own iPad Pros.

AND, for the umpteenth time, this touchscreen issue seems to NOT affect every iPad Pro model in existance.

The person I have been talking to stated that this issue could be of a location/environmental/temperature/altitude based nature, also, and maybe why this issue is so sporadic, with NO true causation and why this is difficult and hard to pin down

So, if Apple engineers are STILL NOT really fully aware of this issue AND the tech and electronics media are NOT reporting on this touchscreen issues, then my reality is correct.

There all only a small, minority of iPad Pro models being affected by this and those with this issue have NOT supplied sufficient feedback to Apple and to Apple engineers to get this issue put on their priority radar!

The number of feedback postings for an entire year must NOT be there for Apple to consider this iPad Pro touch screen issue a priority for them to fix and to issue the fix in any updates, to date.

This iPad Pro touchscreen bug is simply NOT rampant enough across the globe, it would seem.

This was a disappoitment for me to learn, for sure.

Nothing more can be done except continue to issue feedback and contact Apple by phone and, essentially, keep bugging them about this issue until someone at Apple finally gives this issue some priority.

I am only a user here, too, and I am just as limited to as what I CAN DO to help all affected by this situation.

So, I have interest in this issue and its final outcome, as well.

This issue is what is keeping me from ever risking upgrading my own iPad Pro, for all of this time.

I has been 3 long years since I last upgraded the iOS on my own iPad Pro.

All of the various 64-bit versions of iOS for the past 3-years have had some serious issues with some that still have never been fully resolved.

This intermittent, unresponsive touch screen issue can just happen at a random iOS upgrade/update and once an iPad Pro gets this issue, it never goes away.

This, to me, seems like a very severe bug, when it happens!

Unfortunately, this touchscreen bug doesn't appear to happen often enough and NOT enough feedback reported for Apple to care to solve this issue in a timely manner, it would seem.

At this very late date, it is what it is.

There is a limit to what we can do, as Apple product users, to try and get Apple's attention on this rather seemingly sporadic and infrequent touchscreen bug.

Another tidbit.

I have noticed that I am no longer seeing posts here every single day about this intermittent, unresponsive touch screen issue, like I used to, for the past couple of weeks, or so.

Maybe the last couple of iOS updates have fixed this issue, somehow, for some iPad Pro users.

Not sure about this and no way to tell except these unrsponsive touch screen postings have dropped in frequently here, lately.

Dear friends,

Follow my reasoning and think with me:

The warranty we have refers to the product. Its duration refers to the date of purchase of the device and ends after 1 year. Right?

However, if the issue concerns the Ipad operating system, the warranty date should refer to the software update deployment / installation date ... I am not aware of each line of IOS disclaimers and terms of the Software Warranty. But I understand that, in theory, there should be attention and guarantee to the flaws caused by the software problem and the warranty validity, in this case, should refer to the date of the IOS update and not the device purchase.

Am I right?

Purchasing AppleCare+ extends the warranty and adds extra terms to the warranty for two-years.

And Apple simply has never done what you are describing or wish to have happen.

No tech company does this.

No appliance company does this!

Installing new software will never change how long a device warranty should be extended for a device or even an everyday appliance.

Apple just changed their policies for extended AppleCare+ support now for any currently warrantied iDevices and computers now that will alow you to continue to pay a monthly fee to continue your paid AppleCare+ warranty service for as long as Apple continues to support the computer or device.

Which for most iDevices, is now for between 4-6 years, now!

Apple just recently made this change to paid extended AppleCare+ plans and to current iDevice owners who are still paying for extended AppleCare+.

My Wife and I plan on taking advantage of this new extended monthly pay AppleCare+ plan when her extended AppleCare+ plan runs out for her iPhone SE, at the beginning of Jan 2020.

I’ve had my iPad replaced 3 times at the Apple store. Seems to me with the copious noted the Apple tech took that someone at Apple would have intercepted the hardware and tried to replicate the issue. I have the issue with an unresponsive touchpad when I try to login!

i did order the newest 12.9 (generation 3) which will be here tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if I get one of the “good” units that does not have the issue but I’m not holding my breath. If I have the same issue I will return for a refund.

Taking every precaution, I recommend that you set up your new device “as new,” rather than from the backup of your old device. Start with the minimum number of apps that you use daily, then if all is going well, add in the other apps a few at a time. Change the iOS setting the same way, in steps, paying attention to any changes in performance. Good luck.

I am frustrated by the touch problem, I am still under warranty and wondering what to do. From what I read here I form the conclusion that if I take it up with Apple they will take it back and send me a second hand one which will possibly/probably still have the problem. I don’t find this a satisfactory prospect. Alternatively I would like to log the problem with Apple and have them send me a new replacement when they have fixed it. I understand that Apple will not come into this forum but has there been a statement anywhere that they acknowledge that the problem is being looked into?

Nov 4, 2019 10:57 AM in response to LotusPilot

At risk of going off topic, the replacement device I was given, which you say is a refurb (I’ll bow to your wisdom), would be a disappointment to me if there were ANY signs of touching, handling or use on the body or screen, or if the battery did not function as if new, or if there was really any other indication that it is not identical to a new one out of a white box. And I looked it over very closely, and know what I am looking at. (I have had many iPads. I have also had them replaced before.) If this unit is refurbished, it is without any sign. More to the point of this thread, it is not suffering from screen problems (so far, knock wood).

At any rate, thank you for “incorrecting” me, a trend all over the internet, I have found.

Nov 4, 2019 11:10 AM in response to mythdoc

The correction was merely to dispel any doubt as to the type of replacement you have received. Some “brown box refurbs” are much better than others. If the entire casing has been changed, then they can appear “cosmetically” new. Some here have reported receiving some pretty shocking replacements.

All refurbs are reported, by Apple, to have a new battery.

I wish you well in receiving a fault-free device.

You may be on to something. I was having serious problems with every other touch not registering. I did have a pencil registered. Even with Bluetooth turned off I had still had the problem.

I turned BT on and unpaired my pencil. The touch problem instantly went away.

Note: The 'adaptive' setting discussed earlier in the thread was turned on with no effect. It is still on.

Nov 5, 2019 7:02 PM in response to J9988

I don’t have the pencil either so that won’t work for me. I did the update on Sunday morning, nov. 3rd but I’m still having the touchscreen problem. I took forever to login to this site and trying to type is a joke with so many letters being dropped. Has anyone talked to Apple regarding this? I was at an Apple sto yay (the previous word should be yesterday!) to replace my incompatible 8 for xfinity mobile. Don’t buy an Apple phone from att, it will never work on another carrier! I asked several Apple people about this iPad problem and they didn’t know anything about it, 😉 yeah sure...

Nov 5, 2019 7:29 PM in response to Jans45

I have.

See my later posts about this on later past pages of this post.

Unfortunately, it appears not enough iPad Pro models have been affected and not enough feedback supplied to Apple for Apple engineers to be made made aware of this still growing issue only affecting a minority amount of iPad Pro models across all 4 model years, as well as, some of the new 2019 iPad Air 3 models which use many of the same design elements as the 2017, 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro models, that are, also, affected by this touchscreen bug.

So, this issue has NOT been on Apple's priority fix radar at all, it would seem.

Could be a very long time before all iPad Pro models with this touchscreen bug get a fix/solution/iOS update from Apple.

At this very late stage, almost a year now, it is what it is.

Apple engineers are NOT aware of this as it appears NOT enough iPad Pros have been affected by this touch screen bug and it appears NOT enough feedback has bben supplied for Apple personnel to be sufficiently alerted to begin to even start working on this issue.

Sorry.

I sent my iPad to Apple and clearly explained the problem. I even provided links to 2 YouTube videos that I uploaded showing the unresponsiveness and then clearly showing my device serial number.

I got an email from tech support saying they received my iPad. About 2 hours later I received another email saying they couldn't replicate the problem and were shipping my iPad back to me. I asked specifically for a replacement.

I'm definitely disappointed. If this was a 5 year old iPad it would be one thing, but their flagship Pro model with the No-Motion 0Hz responsive display is beyond words. The Pro-Motion was one of the reasons I got a Pro model.

Anyway, definitely looking more closely at Android tablets. I want to sell my iPad but cannot in good conscience sell this to someone and say it's in good working order.

Hi, I would like to let everyone know a solution that just worked for me. I have owned every IPad thats been released but only have this problem on the ipad pro 11 inch. Its driven me crazy to the point that I purchased the new apple pencil just to interface with my $2000 device. The ipad didn’t start out this way and thats why i’ve felt that its always been a software issue instead of faulty hardware. In fact as I type this its amazing because its the first thing I’ve been able to type on this keyboard that is longer than 2 words where I don’t have to hit keys over and over again to make them show up. On to my solution.

the fix that worked for me was to turn off tap to wake. The moment i turned it off all my stupid touch screen unresponsiveness stopped immediately.

Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > touch > find “Tap to Wake” and turn that OFF

basically everything under accessibility > touch is turned off in case its a combination of settings. I truly hope this helps some other people. Even if it helps just one. Its driven me crazy for months and it feels amazing to have this **** thing working again. I was starting to believe at some points that something was wrong with the tips of my fingers.
