iPad Pro touch screen intermittent unresponsive

I have the iPad Pro 10.5 inch for roughly 4 months. I started finding intermittent touch issues that have been random. Its extremely bad when playing games where precision touch and timing are critical. Just normal day to day usage for email, web browsing, etc. you would not notice it much unless you attempt to draw in notepad, then I can see how occasionally it does not register touch while sliding a stylus and other times, its like a rapid touch response.

I have performed every single thing I could find from others having the same issue, and from the looks of how many complaints about this, it sounds like either design flaw or iOS issues. I have tried the following:

  • Turn off and on
  • Hard rest/restart
  • Clean the screen frequently
  • Removed the expensive tempered glass Screen protector
  • Switched case to a case that has no magnetic close
  • Use the Apply plug instead of a multi-usb port charger
  • Turning off Bluetooth
  • Turning off Background App Refresh
  • Turning off Multitasking
  • Etc...etc...etc..etc.

Nothing has worked and seeing all the various forums and posts from people, this is a big problem a rather massive quantity of people have with the iPad Pro's. This weekend I have just had it with this very new iPad Pro that is driving me crazy... I hit the forums looking for anything i have no tried and its all the same, nobody knows and many have just given up on iPads, a lot of people have turned their iPads in under warranty only to find the refurbished units they receive all have the same issue. I am right there with them, I have absolutely loved the Apple devices, my house nearly all Apply, TV's, iPhones, iPads, MacMini's, etc.

I was preparing to erase my iPad Pro and send it back, but gave it one more try, i literally went through every single setting, turning off every single feature and hard restart. After that, the issues are so far gone. I may have a pretty much featureless iPad Pro right now, however no more intermittent unresponsive touch, so i suspect its an iOS issue! I have no interest in turning on any settings one at a time until the issue returns, for now hoping it will eventually be resolved and i can turn everything back on, i just need to not deal with this issue for a while as it has nearly turned me away from Apple products going forward. As expensive as these devices are, we should not have these kind of issues.

This is NOT what you are going to want to read/learn, but this is a known issue across all iPad Pro year and models ( even the brand new 2018, 3rd gen iPad Pro models ) and it is starting to affect both the 2018 and 2017 6th and 5th gen 9.7 inch screen iPads, too!!

I am beginning to think that this is a growing issue that is NOT hardware related, but either iOS 11 and/or iOS 12 related bug.

I have a 1st gen, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro still running iOS 10.3.3 and I am NOT experiencing these recent intermittent touch screen issues.

The best you can do is alert Apple to this growing issue.

The only way to get Apple to, DIRECTLY, listen to you is to use their feedback portion of their website.

“For those whom have touch screen unresponsive issue with iOS 12.1.....

Goto Setting -> General -> Accessibility -> Touch Accommodations, Turn on Touch Accommodations. Leave everything else in the options alone.

All my touch issues gone!”

FYI - online support had me restore to factory setup, intermittent touch screen response problem still exists, they deemed it a hardware problem. I went to the Apple Store Genius Bar who concurred (even though the problem can’t be reproduced on demand) and they replaced it with a new unit under warranty at no charge. Of course the new unit only has the remaining warranty for the original, so given this issue I decided to put the new one under Apple Care. I felt that Apple handled this quite well without putting me through any of the “try this”, “try that”.

Had this issue with new 12.9 iPad Pro. Tried everything mentioned above, including reboot/redownloading of hardware, not just software. Apple support online not helpful. Visited store. Of course, the problem didn't happen with tech. Replaced with reconditioned iPad Pro; 2 weeks newer model. Unlike with original iPad, I did not update to 12.1.4 iOS, choosing to stay with 12.1.3 . Have not experienced the problem since. I think the problem lies with 12.1.4, either inherent or in conjunction with 3rd party apps. As near as I can recall, the problem didn't start until after I had updated to 12.1.4. Can't swear to it, but fairly sure.

Problem Fixed by switching cases!

I tried removing the case I was using and the problem went away. The case was an inexpensive transparent TPU plastic trifold flip case. Since then, I switched to a Logitech keyboard case a couple days ago and the problem has not come back. Could the TPU allow static buildup that interferes with the capacitive touch sensors.

Some background: I was having problems with the screen on my 2017 iPad Pro 12.9" going non-responsive for 5-15 seconds every minute or two, sometimes several times a minute. I am on my second iPad... the first was replaced with a new tablet under warranty at the 11 mo for the touch problem. After replacement, the problem came back after a ~month. The first tablet worked perfectly in the old problematic case for over 6 months and the second worked perfectly in the old case for a month. Now that I think about it, both tablets started to have touch problems as winter started... Perhaps it is related to dry air and the increased static charges that come with it.

Try removing the case you have your tablet in, turn it off for awhile, and then try using it for a few hours out of the case.

Does anyone have the touch problem while not in a case? Have you encountered the problem in humid conditions (+60%)?

The best you can do is to continue to alert Apple to this growing issue and hammer the Apple iPad feedback pages mutiple times on this issue.

As I stated, this intermittent, unresponsive and unresolved iPad Pro touch screen issue has plagued a small, but growing minority of iPad Pro users across all 4 years of iPad Pro models for over 18 months, now!

Also, I STRONGLY suggest contacting/reaching out to Apple Product support and services on this larger screen iPad intermittent, unresponsive touch screen issue and you have to escalate this issue to higher levels of Apple senior customer support personnel to get their attentions on this issue.

This is a serious, unresolved hardware/software problem that has been plaguing a growing minority of iPad Pro users, across all model years, for the past 18 months, or so.

For iPad Pro users, this intermittent, unresponsive touch screen issue started waaaay back with either a late iOS 11 update OR with the introduction of iOS 12.

There is NO resolution for this from Apple, to date.

No way to know whether Apple has any type of fix/solution coming soon, or not.

Sorry that you iPad Air 3/iPad Pro has contracted this issue.

You are now part of small, but still very much a growing minority of larger screen iPad users that have been affected by this intermittent, unresponsive larger iPad touch screen problem/bug/flaw.

Sorry & Best of Luck to You!

So I have had my iPad Pro 12.9 for about 2.5 years. About 6 months to year into my ownership the iPad screen started to become unresponsive. Initially every now and then and then about a year ago it started getting a light leak along the left hand side of the screen. Initially only in a couple of spots but by now it’s down the entire iPad screen. The unresponsiveness had got pretty bad as well. I would try to scroll in Safari and would have to swipe up to 10 times before anything happened. Forget about writing anything. A quick shut down of screen helped, but only for a few seconds. Basically I was about to ditch the whole thing. The iPad in my opinion and for my use is the best thing Apple has ever produced, but I had pretty much given up. This is until...

I had read somewhere where a guy mentioned the Smart Cover as a possible issue. So I tried removing it, using the iPad on its own. It worked. As soon as I put the cover back on, the unresponsiveness returned. Sometimes sooner, sometimes later. It also dawned on me that the light leak is on the same side as the magnetic strip for the cover. I can’t be a coincidence.

Anyway I’ve ditched the leather Smart Cover I had and the iPad is working as normal again after nearly 2 years of malfunctioning. I haven’t taken it into Apple yet to discuss the issue, although I’m sure they’re aware of it.

I would highly recommend trying this, if you have one of these smart covers.

I’m 80% positive that in my case it is an overheating problem related to software. A couple of months ago after trying everything including reinstalling software etc. I reset all settings to clear any issues with corrupt app prefs and with the case off and no screen protector the issue has almost completely disappeared. It happens perhaps once every month maybe? where previously it would happen pretty much all day everyday. When it does reoccur the back of my iPad is usually hot and so I close all apps and within a few seconds the back cools off and the problem immediately stops. I’ve gone from having a nearly unusable 2nd gen iPad Pro 12.9” to one that is virtually problem free.

Apple still needs to figure out what is causing this - software that makes the device overheat and throttle I presume.

my background: I used to support Apple devices and other IT hardware/software for a large corporation.

Thought I'd post this in case it was helpful to anyone.

I was having this problem for months on my 10.5" iPad Pro and it was driving me nuts. Tried all suggestions I could find - disabling Apple Pencil, changing touch accommodation settings, resetting to factory settings - nothing worked.

I had a silicone back case and an Apple keyboard. After removing the back case the iPad has been behaving perfectly - quite surprised that a flexible silicone case would affect the touch response, but I'm very happy to have my iPad back to a useable state.

By the way just to help others. The 1st thing i did was to clear the cache in Safari. Still has the touch intermittent not responding issue... then i tried to turn on “Touch Accommodation” and it worked. I just feel betrayed that i’m blabbing about touch issues on a Touch Screen gadget. If you can’t deliver on the most basic purpose of your product which is to freaking touch it so you can say you are actually using it. Then maybe just focus on selling Monitors, Laptops Desktops without touchscreen because obviously you don’t know why it’s called “touchscreen” it’s more like a “lookscreen” 😱😱😱😱😱
