iPad Pro touch screen intermittent unresponsive

I have the iPad Pro 10.5 inch for roughly 4 months. I started finding intermittent touch issues that have been random. Its extremely bad when playing games where precision touch and timing are critical. Just normal day to day usage for email, web browsing, etc. you would not notice it much unless you attempt to draw in notepad, then I can see how occasionally it does not register touch while sliding a stylus and other times, its like a rapid touch response.

I have performed every single thing I could find from others having the same issue, and from the looks of how many complaints about this, it sounds like either design flaw or iOS issues. I have tried the following:

  • Turn off and on
  • Hard rest/restart
  • Clean the screen frequently
  • Removed the expensive tempered glass Screen protector
  • Switched case to a case that has no magnetic close
  • Use the Apply plug instead of a multi-usb port charger
  • Turning off Bluetooth
  • Turning off Background App Refresh
  • Turning off Multitasking
  • Etc...etc...etc..etc.

Nothing has worked and seeing all the various forums and posts from people, this is a big problem a rather massive quantity of people have with the iPad Pro's. This weekend I have just had it with this very new iPad Pro that is driving me crazy... I hit the forums looking for anything i have no tried and its all the same, nobody knows and many have just given up on iPads, a lot of people have turned their iPads in under warranty only to find the refurbished units they receive all have the same issue. I am right there with them, I have absolutely loved the Apple devices, my house nearly all Apply, TV's, iPhones, iPads, MacMini's, etc.

I was preparing to erase my iPad Pro and send it back, but gave it one more try, i literally went through every single setting, turning off every single feature and hard restart. After that, the issues are so far gone. I may have a pretty much featureless iPad Pro right now, however no more intermittent unresponsive touch, so i suspect its an iOS issue! I have no interest in turning on any settings one at a time until the issue returns, for now hoping it will eventually be resolved and i can turn everything back on, i just need to not deal with this issue for a while as it has nearly turned me away from Apple products going forward. As expensive as these devices are, we should not have these kind of issues.

This is NOT what you are going to want to read/learn, but this is a known issue across all iPad Pro year and models ( even the brand new 2018, 3rd gen iPad Pro models ) and it is starting to affect both the 2018 and 2017 6th and 5th gen 9.7 inch screen iPads, too!!

I am beginning to think that this is a growing issue that is NOT hardware related, but either iOS 11 and/or iOS 12 related bug.

I have a 1st gen, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro still running iOS 10.3.3 and I am NOT experiencing these recent intermittent touch screen issues.

The best you can do is alert Apple to this growing issue.

The only way to get Apple to, DIRECTLY, listen to you is to use their feedback portion of their website.

iPad Feedback

http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Cognizant Apple employees read ALL feedback generated from all of the various feedback pages and transfers the data to the proper and responsible Apple teams and personnel , but NO Apple employees will ever respond with any type of direct, individual replies from the feedback you post.

The more users that post product feedback about any product issue, the faster Apple is made aware and starts working on a fix/solution for a future software update.

Also, you may want to phone contact Apple, directly in Cupertino, California, and calmly talk to an Apple customer service employee about this issue via the link below.

You are very lucky. It has been a nightmare for me having to constantly return my iPads, wait for the replacements to arrive, not get work done, erasing all my content multiple times etc. I feel it is affecting the 2018 models more than any other though as YouTube videos, articles etc are all starting to surface showing this problem. The fact that every single one of my replacements had this same issue shows it’s a very large issue, hopefully your iPad stays smooth and doesn’t develop this issue because it’s a nightmare.

from someone who’s owned just about every single iPad model this is making me not want an iPad any more :(

The current touch screen issue you are seeing in iPad Pro videos in YouTube is a differnt touch screen issue that started with anyone running the iOS 13/iPadOS beta software.

This maybe a different touch screen issue only related the the iPadOS beta software.

Beta software is not allowed to be discussed here in these official, pubkic Apple technical support communities per the ASC Terms of Use and the beta software NDA agreements.

The people who are postIng videos and discussing iOS 13/iPadOS on YouTube and elzewhere are all violating their NDA agreements with Apple.

I went through that with iPhone SE's.... I had about 5 of them before I gave up and bought a samsung. I didn't happen to use the iPad pro much initially so I didn't really notice it was bad until it was out of warranty. (Just now I had to tap reply about 29 times before it registered... and typing on the onscreen keyboard is next to impossible....) If I power off/on I can get a half day of it working 'better'... but it always seems to be very difficult to use... the pencil seems to work flawlessly, it's just really not wanting to register any fingers.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I understand that as an option. I begs the question, why not just buy an Apple Air instead of the iPad. I was sold my iPad 10.5 as a state of the art machine at the time. The simplicity of the all-in-one package with the touchscreen is the reason the iPad exists. The need to add peripherals defeats it’s raison d’être. I am frustrated by and disappointed with Apple.

Again, thank you sincerely for your reply.

I just sold my iPad Pro 12.9 2017 yesterday for $675 due to this issue.

Like you, I'm seriously considering taking my business elsewhere for my next tablet. It sounds like the new 2018 Pro's have the same touch-screen sensitivity issue as well, so don't think I'll be purchasing one of those.

Any suggestions on my next tablet, or should I get the new iPad and just hope there's a new IOS fix?

>Did your iPad Pro touch screen issues start before or after first installing iOS 12?

I'm pretty sure after iOS 12 but I cannot 100% say when it started since (I think) it was less intense initially.

>Some believe it could be a heat related issue.

I cannot rule out that the iPad was exposed to the sun a few times. But only rarely. If it really is heat related I doubt mine should be among the ones affected.

>Apple Pencil interfering with touch in iOS 12.

I do not own a Apple Pencil and have to my best knowledge never even had one connected to the iPad which someone else owns.

Did your iPad Pro touch screen issues start before or after first installing iOS 12?

  • Got the iPad Pro 11" with iOS 12

Some believe it could be a heat related issue.

  • My main apps usage when this is happening are Facebook, Apollo ( reddit client ), Tweetbot and Instagram. So nothing demanding too much cpu or gpu.

Some believe it is related to a bug or issue with the screen and Apple Pencil interfering with touch in iOS 12.

  • I don't have a pencil

Have you updated to the latest iOS 12.4?

  • I am always at the latest version with autoupdate, but I am not sure this one installed yet, I will check at lunch.

If that were true, every single iPad Pro made for the last three years, as well as the standard, 9.7 inch screen 6th gen iPad, sold and used in the entire world, would've had this touch screen issue long ago and the tech and news media would have picked up on this, long ago and Apple would have been alerted and made to respond to this potential large product issue, long ago.

No standard 6th gen, 9.7 inch iPad user is reporting touch screen issues with their iPads when using their Apple Pencils.

This is simply not the scenario you want/wish to imagine.

And users who do not have issues with a product do not post to a product troubleshooting forum.

The whole entire, three year iPad Pro model using community is NOT having this touch screen issue.

And even it it is more than 1000 users, the percentage of iPad Pros affected is still so small compared to the millions of iPad Pro models sold over this three year period.

Still a very small minority of iPad Pro models being affected.
