iPad Pro touch screen intermittent unresponsive

I have the iPad Pro 10.5 inch for roughly 4 months. I started finding intermittent touch issues that have been random. Its extremely bad when playing games where precision touch and timing are critical. Just normal day to day usage for email, web browsing, etc. you would not notice it much unless you attempt to draw in notepad, then I can see how occasionally it does not register touch while sliding a stylus and other times, its like a rapid touch response.

I have performed every single thing I could find from others having the same issue, and from the looks of how many complaints about this, it sounds like either design flaw or iOS issues. I have tried the following:

  • Turn off and on
  • Hard rest/restart
  • Clean the screen frequently
  • Removed the expensive tempered glass Screen protector
  • Switched case to a case that has no magnetic close
  • Use the Apply plug instead of a multi-usb port charger
  • Turning off Bluetooth
  • Turning off Background App Refresh
  • Turning off Multitasking
  • Etc...etc...etc..etc.

Nothing has worked and seeing all the various forums and posts from people, this is a big problem a rather massive quantity of people have with the iPad Pro's. This weekend I have just had it with this very new iPad Pro that is driving me crazy... I hit the forums looking for anything i have no tried and its all the same, nobody knows and many have just given up on iPads, a lot of people have turned their iPads in under warranty only to find the refurbished units they receive all have the same issue. I am right there with them, I have absolutely loved the Apple devices, my house nearly all Apply, TV's, iPhones, iPads, MacMini's, etc.

I was preparing to erase my iPad Pro and send it back, but gave it one more try, i literally went through every single setting, turning off every single feature and hard restart. After that, the issues are so far gone. I may have a pretty much featureless iPad Pro right now, however no more intermittent unresponsive touch, so i suspect its an iOS issue! I have no interest in turning on any settings one at a time until the issue returns, for now hoping it will eventually be resolved and i can turn everything back on, i just need to not deal with this issue for a while as it has nearly turned me away from Apple products going forward. As expensive as these devices are, we should not have these kind of issues.

Some other user mentioned trying this in another post thread.

If you would have read through this entire post, you would have found the the Tap to Wake temporary fix for the 2018 iPad Pro models has been mentioned here quite a few times and also, imentioned n many other similar postings for the past 12 months this touch screen issue has been going on.

This “fix” is not a solution to the problem.

The intermittent, unresponsive touchscreen bug/issue continues to plague only certain iPad Pros of all 4 model years!

There is NO such fix for any older iPad Pro model users, that have iPad Pros with a Home button, that are, also, being affected by this unresponsive touchscreen issue.

FWIW I bought two iPad Pro 11 LTE recently. Out of the box both were having small issues with the ‘a’ key in the keyboard. Sometimes missing it.

Not major issues, but annoying.

I bought magnetic cases for both, third party, Apple style.

And I started charging both using the iPad 12W Type A charger (instead of 18W) with an AmazonBasics USB Type C to Type C cable.

In just a few days both iPads are much better now. Not 100% perfect, but 90% perfect. Much better.

Send feedback to Apple and call them.

I already posted all of this info, once again, on this very page of this post.

Use the feedback page and make a call to Apple.

After over a year, Apple still has no fixes or solutions for this touch screen issue.

Everyone with this issue needs to hammer the Apple iPad feedback page and put in a call to Apple.

In September of 2019 I bought a gen 3 iPad Pro 12.9. Out of the box there were no problems.

Starting in late October I was having issues with the iPad not recognizing touch. By late November it got really bad, sometimes lagging 3 seconds just to swipe up to go to the homescreen, keyboard entries not being recognized and touch not working correctly in many apps.

Restarting would fix it but only for a few minutes. I updated to iOS 13.2.3 a few days ago and that did the trick! All problems are gone. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Having seen and tried all of the fixes I came to the conclusion that there is not one issue nor one solution. The apparent lack of interest from Apple isn’t going to do their marketing much good as there is no way I would spend £1000 on trust with them in the future.

Anyway to add to the possible solutions; mine was going through a spell of working near normal until I cleaned the screen. I am now thinking static.

Just fully restored my Pro 10.5 to iPadOS 13.3 with factory settings and the unresponsiveness is sadly still there. None of the mentioned "fixes" works since the update. The unresponsiveness on my Air 3rd gen seems to be fixed though, but it's kind of early to draw conclusions since the 13.3 update was only recently released.

It’s not annoying so much because iPhone users do not use Apple Pencil. Because of that maybe lot’s of iPhone users can’t see this issue.

to check the problem, please open the calculator (Apple app) and try to enter number rapidly. You can see your iPhone or maybe iPad recognizes your touch (by changing color of numbers) but the app doesn’t recognize some of the numbers.

I typically get the new phone every year or at the least, every other year. I went from Xs Max to 11 Pro Max this year. The expectations from users over the camera have been something else. And people thought from the ads that the screens couldn't scratch. The new phone's have glass which is harder to break, but just like every iPhone before them, they can scratch, so that thread has been contentious at best, nasty at worst.

iOS on iPhone isn't really much different from iOS on iPad. Your mom will have an iPad in smaller form, which makes phone calls. You can't, however, use a USB drive on iPhone like you now can on iPad.

There is a difference between the reported issues. The iPhone issue is fast typing without app recognition, but the iPad Pro/Air3 issue is a touchscreen without any touch recognition for up to 5 seconds. During this time all apps work without any disturbances and also the Apple pencil works fine. this is a completely different behavior.

In my case Apple send me a brand new iPad Air (sealed white case with supplies) that worked fine for over a month. Today I will connect Apple pencil and check, if the issue has something to do with the pencil. Because most iPad Pro users have a pencil, but only a few iPad Air users bought the pencil. I keep You up to date.

I have the same problem. I have a 12.0 pro 2017 and i have a problem when i don’t clean my screen every ten minutes if i am playing a game or working using touch. Screen becomes not responsive and i cant swipe up or down for a couple of seconds. I have to keep on trying. I complained to apple dealers and they said it’s normal and i have to keep on cleaning the screen. They said the finger print from person to person various and some people get oil on the screen from their fingerprints. I have tried everything and nothing works. This is a tab which means fingerprints should not be a problem and should not affect the performance of the device. Anyways, i stopped playing games because i would have to clean the screen every ten minutes which is ridiculous...

This is a combination iOS and possible hardware issue.

I have a 1st gen 2015/2016, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro that is STILL running iOS 10.3.3 and I am having no such intermittent, unresponsive touch screen issue.

I also, have very oily fingers, too, and I only clean my iPad Pro's screen once or twice a day!

Oils from my fingers have NOT affected the touchscreen operation of my iPad Pro.

My iPad is still working flawlessly.

I have learned over the years to never blindly upgrade or update the OSes of my Apple products until I have vetted the entire OS situation and as such time as the majority of bugs and issues have been fixed.

Since iOS 11, iOS has been a disaster and, to date, I have passed on every major iOS upgrade for my iPad in order to maintain its trouble free and stable operation.

iPadOS is just riddled with issues due to very poor public beta testing.

Too many bugs and issues with some never, ever getting fixed in these newer 64-bit iOS versions.

The drawback to not upgrading the OS of my iDevices has been that I am missing out on major app updates for some of the apps I use.
