iPad Pro touch screen intermittent unresponsive

I have the iPad Pro 10.5 inch for roughly 4 months. I started finding intermittent touch issues that have been random. Its extremely bad when playing games where precision touch and timing are critical. Just normal day to day usage for email, web browsing, etc. you would not notice it much unless you attempt to draw in notepad, then I can see how occasionally it does not register touch while sliding a stylus and other times, its like a rapid touch response.

I have performed every single thing I could find from others having the same issue, and from the looks of how many complaints about this, it sounds like either design flaw or iOS issues. I have tried the following:

  • Turn off and on
  • Hard rest/restart
  • Clean the screen frequently
  • Removed the expensive tempered glass Screen protector
  • Switched case to a case that has no magnetic close
  • Use the Apply plug instead of a multi-usb port charger
  • Turning off Bluetooth
  • Turning off Background App Refresh
  • Turning off Multitasking
  • Etc...etc...etc..etc.

Nothing has worked and seeing all the various forums and posts from people, this is a big problem a rather massive quantity of people have with the iPad Pro's. This weekend I have just had it with this very new iPad Pro that is driving me crazy... I hit the forums looking for anything i have no tried and its all the same, nobody knows and many have just given up on iPads, a lot of people have turned their iPads in under warranty only to find the refurbished units they receive all have the same issue. I am right there with them, I have absolutely loved the Apple devices, my house nearly all Apply, TV's, iPhones, iPads, MacMini's, etc.

I was preparing to erase my iPad Pro and send it back, but gave it one more try, i literally went through every single setting, turning off every single feature and hard restart. After that, the issues are so far gone. I may have a pretty much featureless iPad Pro right now, however no more intermittent unresponsive touch, so i suspect its an iOS issue! I have no interest in turning on any settings one at a time until the issue returns, for now hoping it will eventually be resolved and i can turn everything back on, i just need to not deal with this issue for a while as it has nearly turned me away from Apple products going forward. As expensive as these devices are, we should not have these kind of issues.

This is NOT what you are going to want to read/learn, but this is a known issue across all iPad Pro year and models ( even the brand new 2018, 3rd gen iPad Pro models ) and it is starting to affect both the 2018 and 2017 6th and 5th gen 9.7 inch screen iPads, too!!

I am beginning to think that this is a growing issue that is NOT hardware related, but either iOS 11 and/or iOS 12 related bug.

I have a 1st gen, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro still running iOS 10.3.3 and I am NOT experiencing these recent intermittent touch screen issues.

The best you can do is alert Apple to this growing issue.

Have you noticed that the problem is magnified many times when the iPad is on charge?

Have you noticed that the problem decreases significantly (or almost completely disappears) when you use an iPad without a case?

I'm not sure if the problem is related to the gyroscope. Rather, it is due to electrostatics and possibly poor grounding of the outlet. Please try to reproduce the problem where the outlet exactly has a ground connection. I even ordered a special tester, and I'm waiting for it to arrive.

Could it be the sweat from the hands affecting the touch sensor? Didn’t think about it but the screen behaves as if it was dirty when it’s 100% clean. Maybe from heavy use the moisture seeping into the screen? Could it be the coating of the screen affecting the touch sensor? Just a thought, further testing is required.

Everyone!

Try Paravin's temporary fix with placing foil on the underside of the iPad.

See If THAT could be the real issue! A grounding problem.

See if this physical temporary fix gets rid of the annoying intermittent, unresponsive touch screen issues on your iPad Pro.

This is a very simple and easy fix to try!

If completely true and valid, then. Paravin has found the actual root cause of this issue and why it is so sporadic and unpredictable as to which iPad Pro models get afflicted with this issue.

I had the same problem with an IPAD PRO 10.5 - Soft: IpadOS 13.1.2 - Couple of points...

  1. Accessibility its listed by itself NOT under General
  2. In Accessibility, touch "Touch"
  3. Touch, "Touch Accommodations"
  4. Turn on, "Touch Accommodations" - accept disclaimer warning...
  5. ...and... if "hold Duration" shows 0.10, turn it off.

I have not had the lack of sensitivity problem since I made these changes....

Someone in another post thread posted that locking the rotation their iPad’s screen has fixed her iPad Pro touch response issues, once again, referencing/reinforcing the possibility of a gyroscope/gyroscope calibration hardware/software issue.

Posted today by a user called Meg the Dog.

“Thank you very much for posting this, I set rotation lock on 3.5 days ago and since then have not had the problem show up. I never researched the issue as I thought it might be cause be a connection problem between the fold out keyboard and the iPad Pro. My previous solution was to unmount the iPad from the keyboard and reconnect it - which was a hit or miss solution that would only last for short periods.

Thanks!”

Almost 4 days with screen rotation lock on and this user has reported no more touch screen issues with her iPad Pro.

I am in Chennai India .. My 12.9 2nd gen 256gb wifi cellular iPad had exactly the same problem discussed here.. It became horrible over the time.. it has been 5 months from purchase.. I gave it to service center with doubt that they will return it saying it’s software problem since the issue was intermittent and also i am not sure about the availability of replacement iPad in india.. but to my surprise they run the diagnostic test and said there was problem in multitouch and replaced it with new ipad.. so if your iPad is with in warranty don’t hesitate to go to service center and check out the issue..

Here is the details of the diagnostic test

Diagnostic DetailsReported issue: Sometimes touch not working. Restoration done. Ran apple tool kit test. Checked the iPhone manually found multi touch not working intermittently. Verified the serial number. Hence iPad replaced under warranty.

all the best.. I really hope my new device won’t develop this issue again..

There have been sporadic reports that the new iOS 13.1.3 has fixed this issue, but, as posted here, sometimes software updates temporarily fix this issue for up to a few weeks, then the issue returns.

So, it is really too early in the release of iOS 13.1.3 to make the claim that this recent update has fixed this issue.

Apple HAS been directly alerted by me about the possibility of issues with touch sensors and the iPad’s/iPadOS internal gyroscope, but no way to know if this line of troubleshooting has been pursued by Apple software/hardware engineers, or not.

We will not know until the iOS 13.1.3 update has been running on affected iPad Pro/iPad Air 3 models for, at least 2 or 3 weeks, or so, that Apple has finally fixed this intermittent, unresponsive touch screen issue.

Like I have been stating here and many other related posts, really believe that this is more of a software issue as my own 2015, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro is NOT experiencing ANY touch screen issues still running under iOS 10.3.3.

I am almost entirely convinced its a gyroscope issue, I've been testing and testing the device while drawing. The issue seems to happen almost all the time when the iPad is at a 45 degree angle. When it happens I can't pinch to zoom or scroll or anything with my fingers, but as soon as I lower it to a flat angle or a standing angle it works immediately. It's as if the gyroscope can't decide whether its its laying flat or standing.

I've been working like this: as soon as it happens, I lower the iPad to either flat or standing angle and the screen responds immediately to touch and then it continues to work but I have to remember to adjust the angle a little lower while drawing. It's annoying but it's definitely better than having to replace the iPad entirely. I hope that an update can fix the issue. I have tried every single other option and change of settings but nothing has worked so far. Hope this helps and someone can confirm.

I got some improvement from the screen orientation lock. Not perfect but better. I also tried a settings reset and an as-new restart. Neither worked for more than a few days. Therefore, I have just opted to get a replacement. Maybe I’ll be fortunate to be one of those with a non-problematic device. It’s too big an expense and I’m too good a customer (going back to 1986) not to give Apple a chance to make this work like it ought. Hopefully, I won’t be back anytime soon, 🤞

I hoped that the iOS 13.1.3 fixed the problem, but after a week without any issues the problem is back on my iPadAir3. ☹️

I ordered the send back parcel a week ago and now it should be repaired. I will take a lot of pictures from the device and share them with witnesses, because two years ago apple gave me back a scratched iPhone SE after display repair. This time I want a brand new non-scratched device and I will repeat this as long as I don’t get it. It’s really bad, that You‘ll get a refurbished device from another customer.
