HP Z27 monitor won't wake from sleep with Mac Mini

Hi - i recently bought a new Mac Mini and have it connected to an HP Z27 4k monitor via a USB-C cable. the monitor works great, but if i haven't used the computer for a while and the monitor goes to sleep, I am unable to get it to wake up by moving the mouse or touching keyboard keys.

when the monitor is asleep, the small light on the bottom right corner near the power button is yellow. the only way i've found to wake it up is to turn the monitor off, then turn it back on. While not that big of a deal, i'd love to be able to wake up faster/easier. Is there a setting on either the monitor or within the mac system preferences that I can adjust?

thanks.

Same issue with a 2018 Mac Mini and this monitor - so unsure if the issue is with Mac or HP. I can avoid the complete power cycle of the monitor (far right button) by just hitting one of the other on the bottom of this monitor (after hitting a key on my keyboard). I haven't tried using DisplayPort connection- to see if this issue goes away. BUT I don't really want to - because I want the USB hub features of this monitor...
