Macbook stuck in a loop during install of Mojave from Sierra

Hi there- stupidly i decided to update my macbook from sierra to mojave. It is now stuck in a loop showing error log. - when i try restarting the hard drive it keeps taking me back to the install process, only to show the error log once more. How can i break the cycle?? Have tried recovery mode, safe mode but was so slow i quit start up. Followed other peoples advice on restarting but on mine it keeps trying to install mojave every time i restart. I really dont want to lose my data on the drive. I dont have time machine backup. Is there any way i can bypass the comp trying to install this **** update. Really hacked off with apple and all this. Hope someone might be able to help, thank you

OK, have we tried this?

  • Reinstall macOS from the built-in recovery disk on your computer: Press and hold Command-R until the Utilities window appears.
    • This option reinstalls the version of macOS stored on your computer’s built-in recovery disk, including any updates that you installed.
  1. Select Reinstall macOS, then click Continue.
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current macOS disk (in most cases, it’s the only one available).

Let's see if I know where we're at now... can you install Mac OS on the external drive?

1. Start up from macOS Recovery

To start up from macOS Recovery, turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold one of the following combinations on your keyboard. Command-R is generally recommended, especially if you never installed macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later.

Command (⌘)-R

Install the latest macOS that was installed on your Mac.

Option-⌘-R

Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.

Shift-Option-⌘-R

Install the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

Are these pictures helpful? Did you need to see the actual error log from the (attempted) installation?

In the meantime just checking some other options online...

Worst case scenario:

If it is possible to take some files (music, pics, etc) off this harddrive then I don't mind to wipe the disc. I have not had this computer for a super long time so is not too much trouble as long as I don't loose certain data. I have an external caddy. I hope I can access the files.

Cool. I do have an external hard drive with stuff on it. Can I use that with something?

I also have another internal HD and I have a caddy to connect via USB. This internal drive needs reformatting I think...Or I can install it into the broken mac and boot it up then connect the bad drive via the caddy? Thanks for the help and sorry if I am a bit all over the place ;)

Hi just an update on this problem. I moved house after i posted discussion and have only just got internet again. Am still trying to solve the problem.

So, once my external hard drive is plugged in what do i do? I never got any further.

Also, i am willing to wipe my HDD and reinstall fresh but not sure this approach will do anything. Thanks if you can help

Henry
