Brand new MacBook Air is a 2017

I just opened my new MacBook air and it is dated 2017! Does this mean that it is a 2017 edition? Shouldn't it be a 2018? Has it been sitting around for a year?

The newest non retina MacBook Air is the 2017 model. The 2018 model is the new Retina MacBook Air.

The year in the model name is the year it was originally released, not the year it was manufactured.

The 2017 is considered a current model.

What exact model number is your MacBook Air? Also the notebook's Model Identifier?

  • The Retina, 13-inch, 2018 model is: A1932, MacBookAir8,1
  • The 13-inch, 2017 model is: A1486, MacBookAir7,2

You can find the model identifier by holding down the option key, and then, click on the Apple logo in the upper-left of the macOS menu bar. Then select System Information. In the System Information window, select Hardware on the left-side window, and then, note the value for Model Identifier on the right side.

The image below is from my 2014 Mac mini where the identifier is: Macmini7,1
