Unable to remove HD icon from desktop - previous fixes do not work

I have gone to the library and tried to remove the com.apple.finder.plist and an error window appears saying this file cannot be deleted or modified because it is required by the OS.

Something's not right. com.apple.finder.plist can be deleted. Is this in an admin account?

From your Finder "Go" menu > "Go to folder" then copy & paste this file path:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

Click Go.

Delete the plist file.

Then, restart, or log out and in again.

(You may have to reset some Finder preferences the way you like them)

Drag it to the Trash can?

Are you admin?

Did you try relaunching the Finder?

>Force Quit>Finder>Relaunch

Could be a corrupt plist

From Finder>Go> GO To Folder> copy and paste:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

you can delete this plist and relaunch your Finder

Did you know you can have more then one Desktop with different icons on it

Press F3

you will see your current desktop

In the top bar to the right click the + sign to create new (additional) desktop where you can have different icons showing.

To switch between desktops use (hold)

Control and click on left or right arrow on the keyboard

Well, I could not agree more. The HD icon sitting on the Desktop just takes up valuable real estate today and is not needed. There are other ways to access the drive level from the Finder if needed.

It is a nostalgic carry-over from the original Macintosh System Software.

It's a puzzlement. I don't know what else to suggest.

What does it say when you right click on it ?

In any case you can not kill it, but you can move it to for example the Dock (right side)

When I uncheck it in Finder pref it is no longer showing on Desktop

Just to ask: why do you want to remove the very thing that makes your computer run/work/perform? The HD is more much more than "storage", it is an integral part of the computer which holds your OS, all files, your pics, videos, etc. And it is what you read from and write to when you do anything.

Might need to trash these also & restart...
