One of the apps in my Containers folder is taking up a lot of space.

So one of the apps in my Library/Containers folder (Line Messenger app) is taking up almost 15GB of space. I've since cleared the chat history to see if it was that, and then I uninstalled the app by dragging it to the trash from Applications, to see if getting rid of it will solve the problem. But after checking it's still taking up loads of space, and I'm not sure what I can do to get that space back.

I don't want to mess around with the Containers files as I know sometimes they can be system files but I'm pretty sure Line doesn't need that much space.. I'm not even sure what it could be from! I've since done a Time Machine backup to see if that helps... but I'm at a loss.

Anyone got any ideas what I can do?

(I used Omnidisk Sweeper to check the size)

Hello,

I suggest you contact the developer of that app.

You were right to avoid deleting the container. Although they aren’t “system” files, they are “special”. The app will get confused if you make any changes to it. Some of this data is also cached by some system processes, which contributes to confusion.

If you definitely don’t want the app and do want your space back, you can delete that container manually or with Omni Disk Sweeper. Make sure to immediately restart afterwards. That should minimize the damage. The container might come back due to the system processes that are involved. But hopefully you will get those 15 GB back.

Also, there is a possibility that Time Machine APFS local snapshots will hold on to that data. You may need to delete them. The system will take care of this storage and return it eventually. But if you are paying attention and looking for it, you might notice some funky behaviour.

How do I delete those local snapshots? I backed up Time Machine but it hasn't given me back any space yet. Haha, I'm running only on 120GB SSD with only 30GB roughly left of space. I've tried to minimize as much as possible but it says the System itself is taking up 50GB which I'm guessing is snapshots from Time Machine?

I was going to reinstall Line eventually, but I'm sure that it's not supposed to take up 15GB of space.

Thanks for replying quickly! Hopefully I can get this sorted.

Well I did disable automatic updates and it did happen to clear a big chunk of purgeable space but am nowhere near understanding what is going on as it still says System Storage is using a massive 56GB. What else could possibly be using the System storage or is it just an error in the calculation?

I've actually reindexed Spotlight as well, so that hasn't fixed anything. Omnidisk Sweeper states I'm only using 7GB system storage but I have no idea what the system preferences storage indicator is getting its info from haha. I guess I shouldn't worry about it too much? Still no idea what to do about the 15GB in my Containers folder but I'm guessing not much I can do outside of contacting the developer (which I'm not too hopeful of getting a response to as they're not an indie developer and not based in this country)

There are a number of “other” types of data that are lumped into the “System” category. At 57 GB, you are actually doing pretty good. Here is what mine says:

And even this is 25 GB better than when I checked it 30 seconds ago.

One thing to watch out for is that Apple prefers to use the word “available” rather than “free”. Free space is always the hard limit. That is what the system checks for. But the only thing it is going to tell you about is “available”, which is a hypothetical value that may or may not become useable at some unspecified point in the future depending on a number of different conditions.

Ah, I'm not on High Sierra yet, currently on Sierra atm, though I have plans to upgrade eventually.

I was wondering if there's a way to easily delete some of the older snapshots to make space. It says it's meant to automatically make space but I feel like it doesn't do so.... or there's something amiss seeing as 50GB of space is alone used by the system.

Sorry. I assumed you were using Mojave. You don’t have APFS in Sierra. This is not an issue.

Have you emptied the trash?

There are some bugs with those system space estimates. I’m not sure if those bugs existed in Sierra too. The amount reported by “System”, and your free space, may simply be incorrect. Since you don’t have APFS or local snapshots to complicate things, you can trust Omni DiskSweeper.

Otherwise, everything I said about containers is still true. With 120 GB, you are just going to have to be brutal about what data you keep on the machine.
