I'm reading about my iphone (6) notifications and it mentions Banners, sounds, and badges. I know what banners and sounds are but what are badges? I searched the badges term but only got info on notifications. Nowhere does it define what badges are- just that you can turn them on or off.

Badges are the red "dots" that appear on app icons on the Home screen. They usually have a number in them representing the number of outstanding notifications for the app.
