What are badges in notifications?

Within Notification settings. I don’t know the difference between the Banners and Notifications Centre options. And what is a Badge under notifications?

A notification badge is the little red circle with a number in it. That lets you know how many notifications you have. Banners are across the top, that shows you in the image showing under that in Notification Settings. Notification Center is the page that you can bring down from the top of the screen when you have the phone unlocked.
