Magic keyboard top row buttons only work when keyboard is plugged in. Option of ‘standard function keys’ in keyboard prefs also disappears when keyboard is unplugged. Tried reseting all connected factory devices and pairing them again. Reset NVRAM. Using a 2014 Imac with Mojave. Can't find any solution after many hrs of searching...Could use some help please.
Strange. .Try resetting the SMC.
Also try while in Safe Mode.

Well, if you have the same problem in a different user account and also while in Safe Mode. reinstalling Mojave is about all that's left.
As I said, try the Combo update first.
Have also found when New Magic Keyboard is not plugged in, 'Show Keyboard Viewer' shows the old style AA battery Magic Keyboard. When plugged in 'Show Keyboard Viewer' shows correct new style rechargeable keyboard after a key is hit and then works as it should.

Old battery magic keyboard works fine. Only new rechargeable one has the problem if not plugged in. Volume and brightness keys make 'boink' sound when pressed like trying too close a window that needs an answer to something first. Tried reseting SMC. The screen shots are from a safe mode boot. It's driving me crazy!
I can't find anything that might be interfering with it(only guessing). Are there any plist files which I could delete which store info about keyboards? Would an entrecheck log help someone find something?
I have a new full install of 10.14.3 I have now gone through all my system prefs and app permissions in privacy tabs and have made everything the same as my Macbook Air and still the same keyboard issues. I have also set up a new clean user with admin priv and it also has the same issue. Would posting an EntreCheck log or some console logs help? Would deleting my main user account but keeping the home folder and setting it up again change anything? I have no idea where to go from here. Anyone have anymore suggestions ???
SOLVED... A suggestion by 'dialabrain' was correct. I had installed 'USB Overdrive3.1' some time in the past which was only good for 10.11 and had eventually deleted the preference pane thinking I had uninstalled it. While searching through my apps I found a USB Overdrive uninstaller in my utilities. Ran that and restarted and the keyboard works. Reinstalled 3.1 and same problem. Updated USB Overdrive to 3.4 for Mojave and all good again!!

I wonder if it's the "Swiss French" setting? I'll have to check when my iMac Pro is done updating to 10.14.3.
Okay well, Here's the US keyboard viewer with the keyboard plugged in and not. As you can see they are identical.
So, something is wrong with your user account on your iMac or you have something installed causing the problem.
Ok. So I set up a new user and same problem in that account. What next?? Should I try reinstalling Mojave??
