Apple TV Remote will not charge!!!

I've tried everything to charge my apple tv remote: connected it to my MacBook, used an external power pack, (it did charge to 30% after 24 hours one time this way about a month ago) and now bought a wall charger, but that didn't work either. It's now at 6%!

could be lint or dirt in the remotes connector had to clean out my iPhone many times with a tooth pick when it stopped being able to charge

but of cause could also be a broken connector in the remote or a defect battery
