Messages App Automatically Opens Unread Messages - How To Force List View?

When you open the Messages App, it will open the most recent unread message.

I do not want to open unread messages automatically, and I want the Messages app to go to 1) the list view or 2) the last message I left open (by opening it myself from the list view).

How can I achieve this?

seanfromllanelli:

1) Read all your text messages. You will have none unread.

2) Go to your messages app list view.

3) Go back to your home screen. Confirm you have no unread messages.

4) Have someone send you a text message.

5) You'll see a 1 on your Messages complication. When you tap on the messages complication, it will open the unread message, and not your messages app list view.

Messages you do not want to read yet are read and marked as unread. Successful resolution of this issue would not open the message, but rather the messages list view. This is how iOS behaves.

Here are screenshots I took when testing this process.

STEP 1 and 2 - all messages read, messages app in list view

STEP 3 - Confirm all messages read, and on home screen

STEP 4 - Receive text message, complication includes a 1 / notification

STEP 5 - Tap the complication, and it opens the message, and not the messages list view you last left the messages app in.

I have the same problem. The app will automatically open an unread message -even if it from weeks ago- before it will allow me to do anything else in it.

This occurs when using the messaging app as a "complication" and does not seem to do it when I access the messaging app under "app layout" --although I am just starting to test this theory.

It also does not seem to have a preference for which order to open the messages, although it will usually open the latest one first. When I ran a simple test with 4 unread messages, with 1 being the last to arrive, the order in which it opened them was 1-3-2-4.
