undo migration of Migration Assistant - how to, in detail

I cancelled in progress Migration Assistant Bec it was taking hours and 50hours projected. decided to do a much more selective and manual migration.

though it was running for hours, seems nothing was copied to new Macbook. seems. I did delete the account it created.

is the only way forward now to wipe the drive clean and reinstall mohave OS? and HOW do I do this, step by step? my new MacBook Air did not come with an installation CD [ah, and no CD drive]. I'm uninformed in this realm. thanks.

It's certainly the easiest way and what I would recommend given the incomplete migration you describe.

50 ± hours would not be unusual, and its time estimate can be wildly inaccurate. I would have preferred to let it finish but most people aren't that patient.

Follow these instructions: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac ... All you really need to do is Step 6.

Not a problem any more. All Macs built for about ten years now incorporate the ability to install macOS from firmware, even if its internal storage were to be completely erased, or removed and replaced—and you can't remove built-in storage from recent Macs anyway. No physical media required.
