Bellroy iPhone 8 magnetic case no text message sound

Hello,

My wife has a Bellroy wallet case with magnetic closure on her iPhone 8. When her wallet case is closed she does not receive text message notification sounds. When the case is open text messages sound. We tested this this morning. What would cause this? Her iPhone 8 ringer toggle is switched on correctly and sounds are set up correctly in iOS Settings.
