Right now the play head goes off screen while it is playing. How do I get the play head to track during playback so that it is always in view?

1) Keeping the playhead in sight and scrolling the timeline if necessary is a feature that many have asked for, but it does not exist in FCP X so far. You may use feedback to request it. I for one don't mind it as long as it can be turned off in preferences.
2) To move the playhead to the beginning, press the Home key. In most mac keyboards that is Fn+left arrow
3) If you want to replay a selection, use the forward slash key. Mark a range with the R tool, or select in the browser, then press /
