carplay Honda no device connected error message

had numerous carplay no device connected error messages, Honda Ridgeline 2017, I phone 7. 12.1.3. Tried starting truck first then plugging in phone, new cables, plugged in phone first, all inconsistent. What worked today, I turned off carplay via settings/general/carplay, then rebooted phone, then turned on carplay again and carplay worked perfectly.
