Retouch feature in Apple Photos

I am having very bad results with this feature. If I click on an area while holding down the option key, regardless of how I click and drag or simply click in the area that I want to retouch, it simply smudges and does not give me a clear retouch. Is this something I can control with an 'opacity' setting. I do not see an adjustment for opacity in the latest version of iPhotos. What am I missing?

There is not much you can do.

The user Guide suggests to zoom in, if the retouch is not giving the desired results.

If the mark is small and isn’t removed on the first try, try zooming in to make finer changes.

Or to clone from a different area. But cloning is only copying the texture, not the color and intensity.

Tip: If you’re not getting the results you want, you can copy pixels from another part of the photo and apply them to the blemish. Press the Option key while you click an area that has the texture you want, then use the retouch tool to apply the change. Control-click the image and choose “Clear manual Retouch source point” to stop copying pixels from the area.
