I own an Ipod Classic since 2000. The .metadata_never_index is shows that it is empty and I can no longer add or sync music to the device.
Any suggestions?

That file is unlikely to be the cause of your problem. I believe it gets used if an iPod is connected to a Mac.
To begin with, concentrate on the fact that the iPod doesn't sync.
Does the iPod show up in iTunes when you connect it to the computer? If so, check the Device/Settings/Music pane to make sure that the iPod is set to Sync music automatically. Use the following two screenshots to help you find this view:

Whether it is created by Mac or Windows the intent of that file is to exclude the device from cataloging by the local computer search engine and is normal. See Corrupt iPod Classic - Apple Community and check the HDD stats to assess the health of the hard drive.
