.metadata_never_index

I own an Ipod Classic since 2000. The .metadata_never_index is shows that it is empty and I can no longer add or sync music to the device.

Any suggestions?

All But One Song Syncs to iPod (?) I'm using the latest versions of Catalina and Apple Music. I have exactly 8300 songs in my library–just music; no podcasts, audiobooks, videos or anything else. I have good old iPod Classic (6G, 120GB) set to sync everything. Yet in the iPod's About section, it says there's 8299 on there, and when I use Shuffle (all) Songs it displays "x of 8299" in the Now Playing. I don't remember tinkering with any settings that would possibly prevent syncing everything (unchecked items or stuff like that), and comparing the two libraries side by side to find the missing one is not exactly an efficient–let alone workable–solution. so 1) is this a bug or error with the iPod? or 2) if it isn't and there's really one song missing, how do I find that one non-synced song and change it back to one that does?

Synch options not available in Finder for iPod Classic / Monterey I was trying to update the libraries on my 80GB iPod Classic, and cannot. The only options available are "Check for Update" and "Restore iPod..." Check for Update: "This version of the iPod software (1.1.2) is the current version." Restore iPod...: I have tried this several times, including letting it run overnight (over 8 hours). It never stopped saying that it was still updating, BUT... I ejected the iPod using the Finder and it mounts successfully (I also ran First Aid in the Disk Utilitiy App. In the Finder, the device is listed twice: once with the device name and an icon of a solid circle (turns to info icon on mouseover (circle with i)), and once as iPod. Clicking <iPod> brings up a finder window with folders (Calendars, Contacts, Notes, Recordings). Clicking <iPod name> brings up the Finder window with only two options (see attached image). If I try to change the <iPod name> in the Finder window a dialog says "The selected device could not be found." When I ran Restore iPod..., the music was deleted. Can I synch my iPod Classic, or is it now unusable? (It works fine!!)

That file is unlikely to be the cause of your problem. I believe it gets used if an iPod is connected to a Mac.

To begin with, concentrate on the fact that the iPod doesn't sync.

Does the iPod show up in iTunes when you connect it to the computer? If so, check the Device/Settings/Music pane to make sure that the iPod is set to Sync music automatically. Use the following two screenshots to help you find this view:

which will take you to the Device/Settings/Summary pane. Click on Device/Settings/Music - 1. in the screenshot below:

Is Sync Music (2.) ticked? Once it is, which option in 3. have you chosen?

Whether it is created by Mac or Windows the intent of that file is to exclude the device from cataloging by the local computer search engine and is normal. See Corrupt iPod Classic - Apple Community and check the HDD stats to assess the health of the hard drive.
