emoji font only partially working

In FontBook, the Emoji font displays normally when viewing in Repertoire and Sample views, but not in Custom view. Emojies display normally in Messages preview/list column, but not in the messages themselves. They show as a boxed question marks.

Restarted ATS utility, deleted cache. Validated font. Same problem in Test User account. Would prefer to not reinstall the OS.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

That's normal. Custom View displays latin letter text using the font you have chosen. ACE doesn't have any latin letters, so you get question marks instead. You can't type emoji by hitting keys on the keyboard, you have to use the Character Viewer (Edit > Emoji and Symbols). When you try to type in an app with the font set to ACE, the app will normally switch to another font automatically which does have the letters you are typing.
