iPhone will not wake for message notifications when paired with apple watch

I have missed several important messages because my iPhone will not wake when paired with my Apple Watch. I do get small vibration on watch however depending what I am doing I frequently miss the notification. I can not understand why my iPhone and watch both wake and work fine when a phone call is received and not able to do the same thing for messages. I am so frustrated that I am considering doing away with all of my apple products.
