Issue opening iMovie files on older Mac

I have a Macbook Pro running iMovie 10.1.10- recently upgraded to Mojave from El Capitan. I also have an iMac that I recently upgraded to El Capitan and it is running iMovie 10.0.5. I tried opening iMovie files from my Macbook Pro on the iMac and get an error message saying that the files were created with a newer version and that I need to open with that version.

How do I upgrade to a newer version of iMovie on my iMac? My iMac is an early 2009, 24". Thanks.

iMac, 10.11

Hi, Mark,

To run the new version iMovie 10.1.12 that you need you would need High Sierra 10.13.6 or later. High Sierra requires at least a Late iMac 2009 and you would need an iMac 2010 or later to run Mojave. So it doesn't look like you can run iMovie 10.1.12 on your early iMac. Generally, projects created or updated to newer iMovie versions are not fully backwards compatible with older versions, as you have found.

In your case, I am not sure what will happen when you copy your 10.1.6 version to the iMac. It should be able to play the projects that were created in it as long a the library is available, other wise it will create a blank library. However, I have an old iMovie 10.1.6 app on an external hard drive. 10.1.6 was not able to open an iMovie Library created with or updated to 10.1.10. So if you are trying to play on your iMac the projects that were created on your MacBook Pro's newer iMovie version, I don't think you are going to get anywhere by trying that.

Is there some reason why you want to play your MacBook Pro iMovie 10.1.10 projects on your iMac?

Rich- thanks for the response. Here is what is odd about this. I was running El Capitan on my MBP and had saved iMovie libraries with that MBP to an external hard drive. I had not run it yet using the newer Mojave OS- so files were unconverted. I would have thought that if they ran on the MBP using El Capitan, that they would also run on the iMac using the same OS.

You mentioned version 10.1.12- I am only at 10.1.10-- hoping that would have made a difference?

Thanks again.

Update: I was able to load iMovie 10.1.6 to my iMac. Able to open most of the older files but I may have "peeked" at one of them with my MBP- so it was upgraded and can not be opened (at least that is my guess). It is a shame that Apple does not have a way to save a library in a "prior version" format. I will just have to keep those library files separate if I want to be able to use the iMac.

My next experiment will be to see what happens if I try loading 10.1.12 onto the iMac. I expect issues, but it is worth a try. That would solve my problem.

Thanks for all your responses, Rich. As predicted, the latest version of iMovie came up grayed out and would not open on the iMac- error message stating it was too old. Anyway- I plan to play around with the new iMovie on my MBP and see if it is worth keeping or if I should shift back to the older version for compatibility reasons. Worst case, I assume I can open up the library package and import the clips if I absolutely need to go back (that is my next experiment). Will definitely be keeping the iMac- love the large screen and still have a bunch of legacy material on it.
