Photos app won't show iPhone to import photos

Had no problems transferring photos from iphone 6s to imac photos app until the latest OS 12.1.3 update. Now the iphone does not show up as a device under the photo app.

Is the iPhone unlocked? If not unlock it, after plugging it in.

If you did not yet do so, launch iTunes, so you can confirm the trust for your Mac on the iPhone, see: About the 'Trust This Computer' alert on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

You may need to update to a newer iTunes version.

Photos may not be showing the iPhone, if you enabled iCloud Photos Library on the iPhone, and the iPhone does only hold optimized versions of the photos. Check the iPhone, if iCloud photos is enabled on the device. Even if you did not enable it, it may have become enabled by an update.
