Guessing Activation lock email and password?

Is it possible to just guess these? I bought a iPhone 7 off ebay, the seller said it was for parts as it had a passcode and probably find my phone was on, they said the phone was found. I ended up getting locked out so just did a restore. Before that I did a chat with the cellular company to see if they couldn't get in contact with the original owner. But they couldn't or wouldn't tell me anything, and just told me to contact Apple to see if they could do anything to reset the device.

So at the activation lock screen I just guessed at the email and password, the first one I tried said the Apple ID was disabled. Does that mean that was the right email etc? I tried it again with just some random thing for the password and it told me the apple id or password was wrong. So I did send a email to that email address asking about the phone if they would want it back or if they didn't asking if they'd be ok with taking the activation lock off.

The number of characters in the obfuscated email address is always the same, regardless of how long the actual email address is. So that approach is doomed. For the mathematically challenged, even assuming that the email address is 5 characters long and it can be any combination of letters and numbers (at least it is case-insensitive) each character could be any one of about 40 characters (including allowed punctuation). So the number of possible email addresses, even for just a 5 character email address where you know the first one is 40*40*40*40, or 2,560,000. If you could try one per second it would take 711 hours of guessing or 30 days if you were at it 24 hours a day without sleeping or eating. If the email were only one character long it would be 102 million possibilities.
