Loud interference during calls

Hello,

I've searched a lot and haven't found an answer to this issue so if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

During a call with my wife one of us will hear a loud high pitched noise (not like the weird alien noise I've seen) that sounds like a ringing noise that lasts for a couple of seconds but sometimes its not a high pitched screech sometimes its sounds like a like a guitar twang that starts at a low pitch and goes up to a high pitch noise. If it will help I can get the sound from my dashcam.

Most of the time we are both in our cars calling each via bluetooth to the other but it will do it when one of us is at home. Once I called just from my Apple Watch to her phone at home and it made the noise. I have had the noise happen when I called a different person, but then called many times after to test and it never happened again.

I've turned off WiFi-calling, noise cancellation, bluetooth and reset my network settings.

So far I have had both noises happen:

My car to wife's car

My Watch to wife's car

My car to wife's phone at home

My Car to friend's phone

My Car to friend's car

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and sorry if I have gone on.

I have almost (potentially had it once more) solved this issue by changing my calls to only go through 2G instead of 3G/4G. I was advised by an Apple employee that it was the service providers issue and they are upgrading the masts that are causing this issue. Anyway the only problem for me now is the signal isn't as good but I prefer this over that deafening screech.

So to turn it off go to Settings > General > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Enable 4G > select Data Only.

I'd say have a go and see if it improves it but remember to turn it back on every now and again as in my case they are repairing the masts so it will eventually be fixed. Hope this helps.

This is one of the main reason we are asked to switch off our mobile phones during take off and landing. Everywhere your car is involved. Car's gadget, Cars Electrical interference etc

Electrical interference

Your proximity to power lines & gadgets can also result in noises usually exhibited as an electrical hum. In case your mobile is near a high power line, you should consider relocating yourself to solve the problem.

Radio station transmitters are also known to cause crackling noise on phone lines. If there are radio station transmitters (especially high power transmitters) near your calling area, this could very well be the source of your problem.

Electrical interference

Your phone lines’ proximity to power lines can also result in noises usually exhibited as an electrical hum. This is precisely why phone lines are wired separately and as far away as possible from high power lines. In case your phone line is near a high power line, you should consider relocating the line to solve the problem.

If that’s not feasible, you can consider other viable solutions such as installing filters to get rid of the electrical interference. This should ofcourse be done only after you have ensured that your phone line is installed a safe distance away from high power lines.

The fear of interference comes from the fact that gadgets connect to the internet or to mobile phone networks using radio waves. To explain the theoretical dangers, Peter Ladkin, Professor of Computer Networks and Distributed Systems at Bielefeld University, Germany, uses the analogy of holding a blowtorch to your household heating pipes. The central heating system in your house makes changes based on the readings of thermometers within those pipes, so the blowtorch will heat the water, change the temperature readings and trigger the system to make adjustments.

You are describing exactly the issue I have. We are located in a rural area, not close to any power lines. I get the problem at home, in the car, more or less exactly as you described. I have replaced my phone in the meantime, so I know it isn't a particular hardware failure. I have also turned off noise cancelling, as that seems to be implicated in some problems.
