We just bought new MacBook Pro's. We are fairly new to the Apple world - have had iPhones for a little over a year. How do we get our apps on our phones onto our laptops?

iPhone Apps do not run on Macs, different platforms, nor can they be transferred to a Mac for storage anymore either.
While in the past with older versions of iTunes you could download and store iPhone Apps on a Mac, this is no longer possible with newer versions of iTunes.

If and only if the Vendor offers an equivalent App for the Mac, you can buy it from the Mac App store.
On the Mac, many "downloaded" Apps essential for the iPhone (e.g., Facebook app) are handled just by using a Browser. Since the Mac has Virtual Memory, using a Browser this way works just fine.
