Migrating from a "PROBLEM" iMac to a brand new iMac ... ?

I have a brand new 2017 i7 iMac on my desk, next to my old 2017 i5 iMac ... that has become a nightmare. (I'm starting to edit video so I wanted to upgrade the processor anyway.)

I've done everything that I've read about to "fix"it. Except reinstalling the OS, which I would have, if I hadn't also been having issues with Time Machine. I finally bought CleanMyMac out of desperation ... but it didn't help, although yes, it sure cleaned up gigs of "stuff." It clean out so much stuff Photoshop wouldn't open and it removed Adobe Creative Cloud, that is needed to control my Adobe applications.

When I restarted the iMac the first time after this massive clean-up, it wouldn't Start ... showing me the Circle with Line Through it. I had to start it in Safe Mode and then use Utility > Repair on it. Now it seems better but still sometimes bogs down.

So how do I Safely Migrate to my new iMac, so I don't inherit any problems? I don't know where the problems lie, although CleanMyMac did apparently clean out some left over Norton, etc. files. Thanks ...

iMac 27" 5K, 10.14

First you need to get the old system stable before you migrate any data from it. However before can do that we need to know what is installed on it. You have listed Clean My Mac and also Norton, which are both problematic at best. So we can get an idea of what you are dealing with please do the following:

Please run an EtreCheck Report. Please click http://www.etrecheck.com/ where you will find the app. Once you downloaded the app and created the report please post it as your reply to this post. In order to post it, please use the following link for more detailed instructions on how to correctly post the report:

We can then look for obvious issues that may be causing your problem.

The following MUST be uninstalled using the developers uninstall instructions:

CleanMyMac4

Norton products

To be honest you created quite a mess. Perhaps a little education will help you in the future.

Mac OS is EXTREMELY secure and does not require or benefit by using any third party antivirus, cleaning or ANY third party "maintenance" apps. Almost all will create the exact reverse affect, making Mac OS unstable, slow and appear buggy . If simply kept up-to-date and otherwise left alone Mac OS will run stably and securely for most users for years!

There are zero viruses for Mac OS, however there are a small amount of other types of malware out there, however these are very easily avoided by using some common sense such as never using a Torrent to download software you did not pay for, never download from a site you do not trust, don't fall for scams that "advise" your system has been compromised, these can come as phone calls, emails, popups, mailers, etc. You have to download Mac OS malware, using common sense keeps your eyes open.

Good luck!

You can check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name  and the developer's name in the file name.  For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

For the PACE software search for Name contains pace.

For Norton search for Name contains norton.

Boot into Safe Mode, Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac, and try to delete that norton file. Safe Mode disables all 3rd party software. It's boot time will be longer as it cleans out cache and swap files and runs some diagnostics.

PACE is anti-piracy software which is unneeded and just runs in the background and uses up system resources. You can search for PACE uninstall directions but only use manual directions. Don't download any removal apps.

Even though I've dumped 1,000's of emails from Apple Mail ... it's still very boggy. It will say "downloading 20 messages" ... but nothing seems to be happening? Sometimes I have to quit Mail and re-start it to get it to "update."

But on the other hand, my emails, especially my Flagged ones and my "Important" ones must be save and present in Mail on my new iMac ... so how do I take care of that?!

Could NOT locate Facebook Cleaner?!

Could NOT Restart in Safe mode, or Recovery mode. Tried five times and even used another, brand new key board, since my old one has been acting up. (I DID manage to start it in Safe mode a few days ago.)

Right now I’m running Disk Utility > First Aid on the main HD. It’s been over a half hour and it’s only on “Checking snapshot 9 of 16.” !!!

Btw. I HAD 64 gigs of RAM, but already transferred that to the new iMac, so this problem one is back to 8 gigs.

The real bad thing is that I only have two more days to supply tons of financial information for my Alimony Reduction court case and I shouldn’t be screwing around with THIS! :-( (But I NEED this iMac for dealing with that information.)

Thanks rkaufmann!

... still stuck on Checking snapshot 9 ... :-(

Uninstall the FaceBook Cleaner and CleanMyMac, locate the developers instructions to uninstall both and uninstall them. I did not see any antivirus apps installed, however if you have any installed uninstall by the same method, use the developers instructions. After both are gone, then restart in Safe Mode (Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support ) and then restart normally and post a fresh Etrecheck report.

I hear you. I've been using Macs for 30 years now ... since the SE. Yup, typically no issues but sometimes, something happens and then out of desperation I've reached for these other products.

The Uninstall instructions typically say, use their Uninstall instructions, etc. But I canNOT find any trace of CleanMyMac4 and Norton! I've tediously gone through the Libraries, etc. and cannot find anything! I KNOW a bit of Norton is still in there. It's still there when I have to enter my user name/password, but I don't click on it. I can find nothing in KeyChain either. I tried to run First Aid again ... and this time it stalled out pretty quickly. Searching and Spotline bring up nothing?

Do you think it's safe if I cherry pick my apps and files to Migrate to the new iMac? Aren't the remnants of Clean and Norton in the System and not my files?
