Mac App Store updates never complete

When I see the badge notification on the Mac App Store app, I click to update the apps. When I click 'Update All' or ty and update individual apps, the progress circle shows roughly 80% completion and then never completes. This means that I cannot use certain apps while they are quit for the download.

Here are some details of my setup and steps I have tried to resolve on my own:

  • I'm using macOS Mojave on my 2017 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar
  • I have tried this on an Ethernet network and wireless network
  • I have had success sometimes by quitting the App Store, restarting my Mac, or signing out and back into the App Store. This time, none of those steps are working. Any thoughts on how I can fix this?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi andibulous,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that apps won't successfully update on your MacBook Pro. You've done a great job trying to get this resolved so far! I'm happy to help.

I recommend testing the issue in safe mode. Starting in safe mode allows your Mac to run certain checks, remove caches, and prevent login items from automatically launching. This can isolate possible third party issues. Use the steps and information in the link below for assistance with safe mode:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

If the issue persists, test in another user account. This will help determine if the issue is user specific or system wide.

Have a great day!

Hi Joseph_S.,

Thanks for the response. Your recommendations were good ones. I'll keep them in mind for the future. This time I was able to resolve my issue. I think the problem stemmed from a misunderstanding on my part. I thought I was current on macOS but wasn't. Being that my company has pre-released versions of macOS available to it's employees through the same software update feature, I thought I was avoiding updating top rereleased software. When I explored a little closer, I realized that that was optional and I had in fact missed a public version of the OS release. After the update the Mac App Store worked as expected.

Thanks for the tip!
