How can I transfer content from Mail folders onto another Mac or external drive?

I have several folders set up to organize the email on my Mac's Mail app. Since the Mac is fairly old, I worry that I will loose all this if something happens to it. I would like to know either how to save all of this or transfer it to a new Mac when I purchase one.

You have a number of option to consider transferring your mail between devices:

  1. Try Migration Assistant to transfer them.
  2. Use Target Disk Mode to transfer messages between devices.
  3. Use a third-party app, like Mail Steward, to archive the existing messages, and restore the ones you want to the other Mac.
