Disable 'secondary click' auto-select/highlight?

Hi! I just got my first macbook pro, and super loving it. I had a question I can't seem to find an answer to. I enabled 'secondary click' in the settings and options menu, but noticed that whenever I 'two-finger tap' or 'cntrl click' it auto-selects and/or auto highlights all of the text connected... this is frustrating because its causing me to click or change text or links and things that I've selected, in ways that I don't intend...

Is there a way to change this or prevent this?
