Received several gift cards for holiday, but biggest purchaser is probably my wife. I'd like to transfer or gift some of my balance to her since her. Any way to do that? If so, its not obvious! When I use the "gift" option, it tried to charge my credit card.

You can't, an account's balance can only be used to buy content for the account that it's on, it can't be gifted nor used for gifting content
