volume turns down after first ring. some times theres no volume at all.

iPhone X lowers ringer volume if its face detection algorithm determines that you’re looking at the phone, in which case an audio cue is no longer needed.
It should ring normally when the screen is off, or you’re not looking at it.
This was also helpful in that thread.
Turn off Attention Aware feature under Face ID & Passcode 🙂
