I have downloaded and installed hpprinterdriver3.1.dmg from Apple and I assumed that would automatically find and add the required Driver for my Printer (HP LaserJet P1102w).
However it seems I have to add this myself - but do not know how to do that?
Can some kind soul please help me?

The HP printer driver 3.1 is ancient, did you check to see if your printer is on the list, there was an HP printer driver 5.1 that is newer.
HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for OS X once downloaded double-click to install.
also go to the HP website, https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-p1102-printer-series/4110394/model/4110306 see if you can get any more information there.
Also try this, If you can't print from your Mac or iOS device - Apple Support school down to 'reset the printing system'.
