I'm all excited to throw a second nano sim in my new iphone XR, bought at an apple store in Canada. I open the dual sim try to find there is no second slot for my other nano sim. I thought the new iphone xr's had a dual nano sim tray. Can somebody explain?

No. There is a slot for one Nano SIM and a built in eSIM. The only phones with two physical SIM sockets are the ones sold in China and Hong Kong.
