BluRay burner Samsung SE-506CB with HighSierra/Mojave

Found a few people having suddenly problems with this burner. I am was using it mainly as a reader. As of High Sierra could no longer use it. No discs could be read. A dreadful ' the disc you inserted is not readable by this computer' message was displayed.

However, after some testing I found that when MBP is booted with the Samsung plugged in, the unit is coming alive. It reads and mounts the AudioCD's I want to import in iTunes.

If it is unplugged and plugged back again - bad luck, it no longer reads the disks.

I did a test with a BD disk - same behaviour. Reboot with unit plugged - the BD is mounted and I can browse its contents ( did not test playing a movie as I have no software installed for that). Plug off/on again and bum, disc is no longer readable.

I am no expert but it looks some USB conflict is affecting the plug and play capabilities of the unit.

Hope this workaround will help somebody.

Cheers.

Hi,

Thank you for expressing interest in the topic.

My post is not a question. I am just trying to help other people still get some value back from their purchase.

The unit was sold under a joint venture with Toshiba. Apparently the line was sold to a third company which filed for bankruptcy within one year of the purchase - another way to dump the product and the buyers. There are some forum entries, here and there, from people who tried to convince Samsung to honour , in the light of the events, at least their moral obligation - to no result.

Kind regards,

Aurelius
