Import voice memo to GarageBand, "you cannot import a rights-protected AAC audio file"

I record a voice memo on my iPhone.

I want to import it to GarageBand to edit it.

I sync the memo to iTunes.

I attempt to import to GarageBand.

I get the error "Can't Import Protected File. You cannot import a rights-protected AAC audio file."

Why is my own voice-memo rights protected?

Why do I not have the rights to my own voice memo?

How to get around this?

Is there a way to do it without converting the voice memo to an MP3 file?

iMac, 10.11
