installing new apps in macOS Mojave: dragging app icon from install disc to app folder icon in the dock does not work anymore

The image above is just an example, but the issue is for all new apps which are downloaded from the internet in so-called installer volumes:

For all macOS X versions since 10.1 I was literally dragging a new app icon from the installer volume onto the application icon in the dock.

This worked until High Sierra.

In Mojave, when I do so, only an alias icon of the application located in the installer volume gets into the application folder.

To install the application now, I need to first open the application folder, then drag the app icon from the installer volume into the application folder.

Is there a way to make the dragging onto the app icon in the dock work again? (sorry I have difficulty changing this habit)

Well I suppose you shouldn't have posted a picture illustrating them if that's not what you meant. To be honest I don't know why you would want to drag the icon all the way to the Dock instead of just to the alias inside the .dmg. At any rate, dragging the app to the application folder in the Dock works for me in Mojave. If yours does not work, try running the command…

killall Dock

in the Terminal.

hey... I never thought of dragging the app icon from within the dmg file onto the app folder inside the dmg file: just tried and that indeed works well. Thank you very much!

As said before, dragging the app icon to the app folder in the Dock does not work anymore for me. Maybe this is due to my "old" iMac15,1 (late 2014)

Doing the killall Dock in the Terminal does not solve the issue.

But from now on I will drag the icons inside the .dmg window... much simpler!

The image you posted is typical of .dmg files that once mounted show the app icon and an alias to the Applications folder you drag the app icon to. It has nothing to do with the Dock. You can in fact drag an app icon from the mounted .dmg to the Application folder in the dock if you prefer. The Applications folder in the Dock would not have the curved arrow on the bottom left of the folder.
