Harmann Kardon Onyx Studio 5 Speaker issue

Hi folks,

ever since I bought this speaker for my new MacBook Pro 15, the 2018 model, I noticed an issue that I would never get on my iPhone.

The bluetooth speaker connects, the speaker actually acknowledges it with a pairing successful sound, I can also see it at the top bar on the Macbook, the sound preferences are set to the Bluetooth speaker as well but yet I still get no sound from it. It works after you re-pair everything, or sometimes it will work from the first try. Overall very inconsistent experience. I know it's not the speaker because it works fine on my iPhone.

All help much appreciated,

Thanks!

Matt

Hi this method worked for me :-) I think it will be useful to solve this problem.

_Using Terminal

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Type sudo rm -R /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
  3. Enter.
  4. Type in your password.
  5. Enter.
  6. Restart your Mac.
  7. Go to System preferences > Bluetooth.
  8. Turn Bluetooth On.
  9. Now try to pair your devices.

Using Finder

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Click Go.
  3. Click Go to Folder.
  4. Type in: /Library/Preferences
  5. Click Go.
  6. Find the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file.
  7. Move the plist file to the Trash.
  8. Click Go > Go to Folder
  9. Type in: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
  10. Click Go.
  11. This time find com.apple.Bluetooth.XXX.plist file (this will be made up of some random letters) and move it to the Trash.
  12. Now restart your Mac - it will automatically generate new Bluetooth plist files the next time you turn Bluetooth off and on again.

5. Re-configure and reset

This is the last port of call. You can easily reset all your Bluetooth devices from the menu bar.

  1. Press shift + Option/Alt at the same time as you click Bluetooth in menu bar.
  2. Click on Debug > Remove all devices.
  3. Open the menu again and click Debug > Reset the Bluetooth module.
  4. Now try and re-pair your Bluetooth devices.

Having the same trouble here. I had a 2011 17" MacBook Pro and thought that was an incompatibility between the speaker and the old Bluetooth version of my computer. However, I just upgraded to a 2018 13" MacBook Pro and I am still having the same issue. Sometimes the speaker won't even connect, and sometimes it connects temporarily but I cannot change the volume of the speaker from the computer (actually I can change the volume but it doesn't reflect the changes on the speaker, the volume stays the same). Everything works perfectly fine using my iPhone XR though. It would be great if someone from Apple had a look at this issue.

I have the same problem. The speaker is discoverable, and shows up in the list of devices to pair, I double click it and the speaker registers that it has paired. It briefly shows as connected, then I get the spinning rainbow wheel and it drops the connection. Works fine with my iPhone XR, and old 7 and an even older iPad Air 2. Weird, and frustrating.

New Macbook pro 2019 same issue with my Studio 5. It seems the commands are not passing to the speaker correctly. I'm guessing the speakers firmware is not properly setup to properly connect and accept macbook key commands from local itunes and applications on the macbook. I opened a case with Harmon Kardon im sure an engineer could replicate and resolve this issue. Ill let you know what I hear back.

I Agree that it is not worth 400$, I’ve bought mine for app. 155$ (New) (1599 swedish crowns) don’t think that I’ll find a better speaker for that price now. And as it works with the most gadgets except for the Macbook the problem is probsbly the Macbook, not the HK. But as far as it works with our phones - we’ll accept the connection issues (but it is still a problem that hoppfullt will be solved).

Hey, did you guys fix this issue?

Actually I used to use Onyx 3 for a year and I noticed sound issue.

So I've got replacement to Onyx 5 yesterday.

But no sound from this though Mac and Onyx are connected super well.

I've tested with all of my devices; Galaxy S10 5G, iPhone 6S, iPad, Windows laptop.

Everything works perfectly except Mac.

There was no problem when I used Onyx 3.

Even I asked to Harman's Korea service centre, and still I couldn't solve it.

If anyone knows about this issue, please share :)

I usually enjoy listening to music and watching a movie on my Macbook :(

Thanks,

Thank for info. I also am UNABLE to connect my Harmon/Kardon Onyx Mini to myMAcBook Air or iMac.

TO APPLE,:

Why is this not yet fixed? But, bluetooth works fine on my iPhone and Onyx Mini. So what is your agenda with Harmon Kardon? Ridiculous. Please advise if issue has been dealt with so I can listen on my MacBook Air and iMac. I was just at Apple store and they assumed it was a problem with Harmon Kardon, which it apparently is not. You are wasting our time and energy. Not appreciated, APPLE.

Assistance please

I have to re-post its status.

I thought it works well, but actually it is not :(

Connection between Mac & Onyx is not so stable and it works well sometimes, but not every time.

I do not know well. I've tested quite many times such like connecting with other devices, disconnecting bluetooth and re-registering and so on. BUT IT DOESN'T WORK WELL WITH MAC ONLY.

With all of my devices work well except for Mac only :(

Thanks so much for posting! It’s really appreciated. Not an option for me. I would like to hear from APPLE. Concrete solution pls. Options? We pay good money for products that does not work properly (Bluetooth). And Harmon Kardon Onyx speakers are top of of the line. At minimum Apple, a credit AND a solution. No one has yet responded from APPLE on this. Unacceptable. The amount of time we have all spent trying to figuring out this sync issue only to find it’s an Apple malfunction.

Understood. It’s very frustrating. And to think so many of us have wasted so much energy and time trying to figure out the problem. I get the feeling, our issue with Bluetooth is simply not a concern for Apple. They seem to just want us at ease on our iPhones for their reasons (ie. marketing, tracking our behaviour, data collecting). Google could not work as well without Apple, is my point. Says a lot about the company. We are past the “cool” aspect of having of having these devices. I care about corporate integrity.
