screen garbled after waking up by opening cover

On a 13" retina display 2018 MacBook Air, once every 20 or so times, waking up from sleep by opening the cover I find the screen like this. Closing and opening the cover 3-4 times usually restores the screen to its correct state.

MacBook Air (2018 or later)

Go step by step and test.

1.  Reset PRAM:   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222

Some of the display settings are stored in PRAM.

2.  Reset SMC.  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Choose the method for: “On Mac notebooks with non-removable battery”

3.  Start up in Safe Mode.   http://support.apple.com/kb/ph14204

To restart normally click the “Restart” button at the bottom.

If this does not help, contact Apple.
