Wondering if anyone knows if El Capitan Mac can take live photos on FaceTime calls?

Apparently in Mojave you can, but for older macOS releases I think you need to just take a screenshot

In the above link, ignore the Command-Shift-5 as that is a Mojave feature, but the other Command-Shift-3 & 4 combinations will work
Command-Shift-3 for an entire display screenshot
Command-Shift-4-Space -> Click on FaceTime window to get just the FaceTime window
