unlocked phone is now locked in Italy

I bought an unlocked iPhone 7 plus at Best Buy in the United States. They helped me put in a Tracfone SIM. I use pay as you go, no contract in the US. This was less than a year ago. Now I am in Italy and wanted to use the same SIM I used last year with a different phone. However I needed a smaller SIM. I went to the Vodafone store and they inserted the new SIM. However my phone now says that it is locked. Tracfone says they would not lock it. Apple tells me to contact Tracfone. I never used AT&T. Help.

Thank you! I called Tracfone via Skype in a noisy Italian bar. Pedro helped me when I was able to explain the problem with your help. It will be Monday before they can complete unlocking the phone. Pedro was polite, cheerful and most of all helpful! Crossed fingers. I am still angry at Best Buy. The salesperson knew I wanted an unlocked phone so it would work in Italy.

Best Buy replied to me and offered to replace the phone when I returned to the US. According to their reply, even after Tracfone unlocks it, it probably won’t work in Italy. They claim they train their team ad there are many foreign students in my town who are interested in these phones. The young man who sold me the phine ibviously was not trained as we had a long discussion about Italy. He had been an opera major and switched to business. Anyway, he knew I wanted to use the phone in Italy. So my optimism of last night is shattered.

I asked them to clarify, but it is too early to get a reply. I guess I will continue to wait for a reply with unlock directions from Tracfone. If that doesn’t work, then I need to think of another phone. I am living alone until my husband (with no smartphone) arrives. I bought the iPhone because it was a better camera and the people who tried unsuccessfully to fix my Moto G4 said it was easier to fix iPhones.
