Question

Ethernet not waking after sleep, went away, now back

So this issue seemed to go away after an OS update possibly, but now it's back, Funny thing though, not EVERY iMac Pro we have in house is exhibiting this issue.

I did notice, on one machine I was troubleshooting, I tried to create a new network location, and when I went into the Hardware tab under Advanced, System Preferences locked up.

So those experiencing this, check the hardware settings, and if you can change anything.

Running macOS 10.13.6 on the latest security updates.

whenever I have issues with the other iMacs, zapping the NVRam seems to do the trick...i should try that on one and test that and the Mojave install...

Yup, zapping the ol' PRAM has cured lots of issues, so have SMC resets.

they're all on 10.13.6, new build is getting 10.14.x so we will get a chance to see if that persists.

yeah, I didn't think the wake for network would matter either, but i should turn that off on one system and see if that does the trick as well. good to have a couple different things changed to see what works.

OK. Also here is some advice one of my co-workers offered:

"Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

I wonder if it's the Router/Switch issuing something during the night?

Does the temperature maybe get higher over night?"

OK, I understand now. Have you checked the other items under Energy Saver in those Macs to be sure nothing there is check marked?

I'm building a new system today, going to run Mojave, and will test if the same thing is happening with the 10G NIC. We also have many iMacs on this switches as well, with 1gig connections, set identically (no sleep, 15 min display sleep, macOS 10.13.6) and have no ethernet drops, so it's pointing towards the new 10gig setup in these iMac Pros.

i never have my systems sleep as they are edit machines, and need to stay on over night if things are rendering etc...all display settings are to sleep after 15 mins, but computers aren't set to sleep, and wake for network is set to turn on. I wonder if that is causing a conflict since the system doesn't sleep, I could test that.

but again, systems are set to never sleep

so here's what I've done to test

1 new Mojave system with power settings setup identical to other systems

1 High Sierra system with sapped NVRam

1 High Sierra with Wake for Network turned off

1 High Sierra with SMC reset.

I'll check them tomorrow morning to see if anything happened overnight.

Correction, EVERY iMac Pro that was left on overnight this morning had this issue. The ones that did not have this issue, were shut down when I got in. So, if anyone has any insight on this, that would be AWESOME.

Yes, it all looks right AFIK. But I wouldn't think you'd need "Wake for network access" if the computer isn't sleeping? OTOH I'm not sure it matters. I'm going to check with some of my co-workers to see if there's anything specific with the iMac Pros they might know.

What OS(s) are you running?

FWIW, I gave up on the Sleep function years ago. Ever since the inception of OS X there have been Sleep related issues. And even more lately. I just use Display Sleep and keep it set for 15 minutes so I'm not burning the screen. That way your Mac uses very little power over Sleep and is ready to use at the touch of a key without any grogginess. UNIX based systems were made to be always on and they’ve been running busy servers 24/7 for decades.
