Vertical lines on Ipad mini

This situation has been going on for a while with my ipad mini. Presently it comes and goes. Shut down ipad and reboot and most of the time it goes away for a while but may times have to reboot several times for it to disappear. Also have rebooted the whole ipad (hold the power button down and then swipe to turn ipad off then reboot) but that did not stop this issue. Very annoying! One solution promoted from this site on the issue was putting the ipad on a soft surface and banging on the back. Done that and sometimes maybe it helps, don't know. This leads me to think it appears to be a faulty connection to the video card in the ipad but on the other hand you can be watching a show on the thing not moving it at all and those vertical lines all of a sudden appear. That, on the other hand, leads me to believe it might be some kind of an intermittent software problem.

Took it to this wonderful Apple store in Woodbridge, Virginia and they were completely useless. I was very unimpressed and totally annoyed. All they want to do there is sell you something and their solution was to have me purchase a refurnished ipad for $199. They is they had never seen this problem before. From the posts on this problem I do not believe that since this problems has been around for a while and they have not done anything about it.

I am just wondering if anyone has taken their ipad to a good repair shop (not Apple) and had them take this thing apart and clean and reset the connections to the video card?

iPads really aren’t like laptops. THey’re not modular inside. What you’ll find is the mother board, battery and display connections. There isn’t an easy way to swap out or check connections because things are all attached to a single board.

Your device is basically dying.

I would suggest that you keep it backed up regularly and then your choices are to replace it soon or later.

If you choose to pursue DIY fixes then you may want to search on other forums. We really don’t do DIY stuff here. If your device is still under warrnaty then take it back in and ask to talk to a supervisor. If it’s out of warranty, then replacement is your best bet.

If you do choose to crack the case and try to fix it yourself then Apple will effectively wash their hands of the device and what you do with it is up to you.

My iPad mini is far from dying. Maybe it is in Apple’s eyes so you can sell another one. It is out of warranty and it is several years old so there is no loss in repair. I don’t just throw things away when they are fixable like Apple promotes. As I understand per the above description, there is a motherboard, the battery and a display module. How is the display connected to the motherboard? Probably not solder. Maybe a ribbon cable? If it is a ribbon cable, it may have an intermittent connection as I have experienced in repairing computers and radio gear.

By the way I have worked with electronics a lot longer than the person who wrote this reply has been alive. Re.tired electrical engineer, professional engineer and ham radio licensee for over 60 years. I have repaired of all kinds of electronic equipment but not things small like this or handset radios or small electronics in general but there are people that do, have the equipment to do so and do it well.

Appreciate your reply. What you said sounded like the same thing the Apple store told me. After reviewing a uTube video of how this thing comes apart, the $199 refurnished iPad might be the way to go unless a newer model is worth the money from a feature and function point of view. My IT son-in-law tells me I should probably get an extended warranty on what I get next. As you probably well know it takes talent to work on small electronics like this.

Not real happy with Apple over this. Gone through two Apple power cords on this iPad and now using wife’s cord for charging until decision on off brand cord. Why pay Apple more when they do not last any longer.

Again thanks for your reply.
