macbook pro waking from sleep issues

Hi, I have a mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro, 2.5GHz i5 processor. Coming out of sleep was fine until I upgraded to Mojave.

Computer seems frozen when I try to wake by opening the lid evidenced by a cursor that won't move. I have to push and hold the start button to force a shut down, then push the start button to start. Then it starts normal.

This occurs when I sleep either by closing the lid, using the menu to sleep, or logging out of my user account and using the screen button to sleep.

Hi John Luke1,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you’re having trouble waking your Mac up from sleep. I’m happy to help.

I suggest resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM on your Mac:

Hi, thanks. I tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and did a safe boot. I can't tell if this solved the problem, as my MacBook Pro would wake from sleep after a brief time normally, it only had the issues when waking from sleep after an overnight sleep. I can sleep it tonight, and try to wake next morning.

I did notice something else, this may or may not have been happening all along and I never noticed it before. Turning off via the menu only makes the screen go mostly dark, not totally off, and the cursor stays illuminted and can be moved around. I have to press and hold the start button for 5 seconds to really shut the computer off.
