Apple Pay has stopped working at Safeway stores. Returns “Not Authorized” error

Note: When I physically insert the same card that was declined using Apple Pay (e.g. Amex) in the same POS, it works.

Same "Chip Error" 4pm, Vons Pacific Palisades 90272.

Checker heard it's a Vons issue.

Been failing at Tom Thumb which is part of Albertsons for over a month. Get Not Authorized using MasterCard. Very annoying and store management doesn’t care.

Good news! I will probably be going to Jewel later today and can confirm your results with my own MasterCard/Apple Pay combo.

It worked for me yesterday too! In a Jewel-Osco using Apple Cash only (no linked card). I did not try a card.

The cashier seemed puzzled why I was excited that it was working. 😳

I am having the exact same problem. February 19 is the last time according to my credit card statement that I was able to use Apple Pay at jewel osco

Another fail at Vons 90272 and my linked MasterCard last night.

Wondering if the new  services and the Goldman Sachs credit card are demanding more breathing room -

and Apple’s going along with it.

Still doesn’t work for me at Jewel (CITI MasterCard). Visa worked.

Yes the only place where I’m having trouble is Jewel. Been that way for months.

Apple Pay did not work for me at Jewel-Osco (Albertson’s) and also at Binny’s Beverage Depot today. “Not Authorized”.

Worked at Albertsons yesterday ... first time in 2 months.

Today Apple Pay with an AmEx credit card WORKED at a Vons in Southern California (same store, phone, and card that has been reading "chip declined" for past two months).

It may not be just limited to Safeway stores or AMEX. I have not been able to use Apple Pay at Jewel-Osco supermarkets (at least 3 of them) for a 1-2 weeks now also. I get the same "Not Authorized" error. FYI, Safeway and Jewel-Osco are now part of the same company. I have been using a Citibank card on Apple Pay. Some of my friends are complaining that Apple Pay now requires them to use a PIN for their linked debit cards. Previously, the debit cards would be run as credit, so no PIN was required.
