Random muting during calls

I was having a lot of trouble with random muting on my iphone 7+ so 3 days ago, bought a full priced XR. I assumed that this would fix the problem. This morning it muted itself during a call - mute button never lights up but phone is muted. I never considered that a new phone wouldn't fix the issue so now am at a loss. Different phone (XR), up to date ios (12.1.4) and still the problem continues. Any ideas welcome. Thanks!
