Missing SMTP Server List

Using Mohave 10.14

Had this problem for months, thought upgrade to Mohave would fix, no go.

I (usually) can send and receive email just fine.

Today, having some issues with one account.

So I looked again.

In Mail / Preferences / Accounts / Server Settings, I can see the 3 SMTP accounts I have setup.

But when I go to "Edit SMTP Server List...", there are none listed.

Is my only hope to recreate them?

I am assuming that after I do, I will still have the phantom ones that I will need to ignore.

I was curious as to what you are seeing, so I did the following:

1. I went to Mail > Preferences > Accounts.

2. I clicked on one of my accounts in the left column of the "Accounts" window.

3. I clicked on the "Server Settings" tab.

4. I clicked on the dropdown menu that is to the right of "Outgoing Main Account" and my email address for that account.

5. I clicked on "Edit SMPT Server List..."

When I do that, a new window comes up like the following, where I can add the details for the account using the "+" button. I assume that this is what you are seeing as well:

I am sure you already know that you need to double-click on each part of the field in the window in order to enter your data after clicking on the "+" button.

And obviously, you need to select an entry, and then click on the "minus" button to remove an entry. Wouldn't that remove your so-called "phantom" accounts?

But my question is this: Do we really need to add anything there at all? The reason why I say this is because I have nothing in that window either, but my Gmail account and my Yahoo account work just fine. :)

OOPS . . . Actually, I posted the wrong image, but I think we are seeing the same thing on both windows anyway. If you want to know what your settings should be, I imagine you can find it by visiting your online Google account, as well as your other accounts. There are instructions in your Google web mail account which explain how to set it up and what to put in each field, I believe.

Hey, Stepping Stones.

I see that you're trying to edit the list of SMTP servers in the Mail application on your Mac. The problem is, there's only one listed, and I'm happy to help.

Change Outgoing server settings in Mail on Mac -- You only need a specific SMTP server for specific email accounts, such as a company email account for example. Otherwise, it won't be listed. If your email is missing an SMTP server that you created previously, you'll need to add it again.

Mail settings you might need from your email provider -- This article provides mail settings you may need from your provider.

If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac -- If you're unable to send or receive emails, the steps in this article can help.

Let me know how that goes, and take care!

Maybe you are saying the same thing, but not sure.

I think that my sending issues might be caused by Yahoo, my providor having server issues.

But I can't start to diganose, because I can't see my outgoing server settings.

Let me try to be extremely specific:

When I go to Mail | Preferences | Accounts and choose the Server Settings tab, it allows me to select an Outgoing Mail Account.

A dropdown provides five choices:

None, My personal iCloud account, My personal IMAP account (Yahoo), My business POP account (Yahoo), and "Edit SMTP Server List"

I am aware that I don't really need all of these accounts, I believe I can send from any one of these from all my accounts.

I just don't want to. I have been, to work around what I believe is a Yahoo server issue, but this should only be temporary.

I want the app to work as designed, set up an account, use it, and have the ability to see and edit the settings.

Now to diagnose my issues sending, I want to know what my SMTP server settings are to a) make sure they are as required by my provider, and to provide the settings to my provider to help troubleshoot.

So I can just click on Edit, right? And then see them and verify or edit them, right?

But when I choose Edit SMTP Server List, The window that opens shows no settings listed in the pane.

I would have expected that each of the 3 settings in the previous dropdown to have an entry in this pane so I can edit or remove them.

Just re-create them some have said.

But this creates a bad situation:

The new settings appear alongside my old settings in the Outgoing Mail Account drop down.

I really don't want to compromise my settings list with twice as many entries.

That would obviously be a potential work around, but work arounds are only supposed to temporary.

So again, my question is, where are these settings located on my computer, why can't I see or edit them in the Mail app, and how do I clean this up?

Just to add to what I said previously, in the case of Google at least, you can find the information you need to fill in the data for your Gmail account in your online Gmail account.

More specifically, after you log into your Gmail account,:

  1. Click on "More" in the left-hand column.
  2. Scroll down to "Manage Labels" and select it.
  3. When you do that, a new row of links will appear at the top of the Gmail window.
  4. Click on the one that says "Forwarding and POP/IMAP".
  5. For both POP mail and IMAP accounts, you will see a link that says "Configuration Instructions". In there, you will find the right server addresses to use, for example.

I hope this helps. Let me know. Thanks! :)

Thanks for your reply.

The window you attached is the window before the server list window, but I think we are seeing the same thing.

I've just labeled my outgoing settings using the terms "iCloud, Yahoo user name, and Work" instead of my email addresses.

You say "where I can add the details for the account using the "+" button". Mine too, but after you add them, can you go back and they are still listed? Mine have somehow disappeared. I must have set them up at some point, because they are in the dropdown, but the details I can no longer see. I know they are there, because they work fine 90% of the time, but occasionally the Yahoo POP account stops working for a day or two, then comes back.

I just wanted to check the settings to see if they were correct, but I have no way to do that.

I can't click on the "minus" because there are no entries.

I even tried creating new settings, with the same name, but then I just end up with two settings with the same name.

Like I said they work fine most of the time, but sometimes not, and it makes sense to me that they should be listed there.

It's like saying the car runs fine and gets me to work, but when I look under the hood, there is no engine.

The one time the car does not start, you kind of expect to see an engine when you lift the hood.

Yes, I mentioned in that same post that I had uploaded the wrong image by mistake. But, yes, I am sure we are seeing the same windows and setup in Mail's prefs.

In answer to your question, I don't know if they will stay or disappear, because I have not attempted to add any. As I said previously, both my Gmail and Yahoo accounts work just fine without anything in that SMTP server window.

And yes, my Yahoo also acts up on occasion as well, and Mail relays a message from Yahoo that the login info is incorrect. I just ignore it, and things eventually return to normal.

My Mail app works so smoothly -- compared to a lot of others here -- that I don't know if I really want to mess around with that window. If it ain't broke, as they say, why fix it? :)

You mine works fine for months, and then not for 2-3 days, and then back again.

It might be that Yahoo is not maintaining the POP servers as diligently as the IMAP ones.

I know I used to use IMAP for my Yahoo business account, but switched back to POP for some reason I don't remember.

I've been planning on moving that business acount to GoDaddy, so I might just live with it for a while longer.

Thanks
