Blank CD—NOT!
I purchased an MP3 audiobook and my iMac is reading it as a blank CD. I’d like to download the MP3 but I can’t even get the file to show up.

Back up a step. You said you purchased an MP3 audiobook... Did you download an MP3 file from somewhere, or did you get a physical CD?
If you have a physical CD, try it in another computer. It is entirely possible that what you have in your hands IS in fact, a blank disk, or an improperly mastered disk.
Professionally mastered CDs will NOT appear as recordable CDs... Those disks are not "professionally mastered".
They are recordable disks that were meant to contain the MP3 files you purchased. Either they are blank, or whoever burned them did not master them correctly. This is common when writing data to CDs with Windows. Windows will not close the session and finalize the disk unless you tell it to. It can usually be read fine in another Windows PC, but most other platforms will not be able to read the disk. That includes Macs, Linux, other UNIX variants, and most MP3 capable CD players as found in home and car stereo systems.
Maybe this will shine a bit of light on the issue:

I've never had one, but I thought that sounds plausible. Now, can you go to the Apple, click on it, > about this mac > system report > disc burning and see what it says there? Mine (an older MBP with a Superdrive) does not show MP3.
If you ordered it from Amazon, then return it to Amazon and get your money back.
Order it from the publisher instead. There is a very real chance that is a bootleg.
What you can glean is how to write an effective post. Your original post above tells us virtually nothing so we are not able to help you. At the very least when posting you should include:
None of this information is in your initial post.
Did you order the CD-MP3 from Amazon or Amazon MarketPlace? The Audiobooks I see on Amazon are from Audible which is owned by Amazon. Either way you should be able to return for refund or replacement unless you're past the time for return.
Good Luck
If you purchased it through Amazon, then contact Amazon and return it.
There is nothing more we can offer in the way of help.
Thank you for responding, but I’m not certain what to glean from the link. I looked through the previous discussion on the topic and didn’t see the answer to my particular question. The last post I saw on that thread was from 2012.
When you say your iMac reads the audiobook as a blank CD, does the CD mount on your desktop and has nothing in it when opened or do you get this prompt?
Yes, I get that pop up and try to open with iTunes. The other images also show up (see attached).
CD does not mount on the desktop. I only get the pop ups shown above.
I’ve tried two different Audiobooks: one labeled MP3-CD and the other MP3 Audio. When opening with Finder this is what I get:
It’s reading as a disc that I could burn.
Tim, they are physical CDs.
KiltedTim ,I believe, has the definitive answer
I went to brilliance and watched the tutorial before starting this thread. Neither audiobook shows up with any data.
