The default paper size for my printer is wrong in Pages

My wife came across an interesting situation while working in Pages. New documents would always open with a paper size if Index Card 8.5 x 11 instead of standard US Letter. We use a HP OfficeJet 8710. In what I have read, Pages gets the default from the printer, but the printer settings in System Preferences are for US Letter size. Has anyone else come across this issue?

In Pages File menu : Page Setup…, is the paper size set to US Letter for your specific printer name? This should also control the default setting preset paper handling target for your specific HP printer. Does the default Document panel's Paper size also now reflect US Letter for your specific HP printer?

The Page Setup under the File drop down menu has the same default of Index Card 8.5x11 instead of US Letter. If you change it, it does change the paper in the document, but it does not stick. It always reverts to the Index Card setting.

The settings in the File menu are controlled by the settings applied to the temp[ate from which the document is created.

Try this:

  • Open a new document, using your usual template.
  • Open the Print Settings item in the File menu
  • Change the Paper size to US Letter.
  • Save the file as a template, giving it an appropriate name (different from all other template names).
  • Open Pages > Preferences, and change the "For new documents" setting to Use Template: your new template name.
  • Close Preferences.
  • Press command-N to open a new document.
  • Open File > Print Setting

Any changes?

Barry
